Mr. Basketball State Player of Year Finalists

A group of six boys are in line to be selected as the 2013 honoree by Cal-Hi Sports. The Mr. Basketball State Player of the Year list now goes back almost 100 years and includes numerous NBA superstars.

CIF Open Boys: Three in a row also is No. 10 for Mater Dei

Stanley Johnson and Aaron Gordon both put on a show in first CIF Open Division state final. Johnson’s 26 points leads SoCal team to victory, making coach Gary McKnight’s program the first to win three straight state titles in the top division.

Saturday CIF Boys Basketball Picks & Previews

It’s not Aaron Gordon vs. Stanley Johnson, but assuming both have their moments it will be other players who likely will decide Mitty vs. Mater Dei showdown for first open division title. Pac Hills, Redondo are favored in D4 and D2, respectively.

New State Top 20 Boys BB Rankings

The big game in the CIF’s new open division won’t be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup, but the winner will assuredly be the Cal-Hi Sports State Team of the Year. Mitty’s big win over Sheldon is also good news for Serra of San Mateo, one of four newcomers in the next-to-last state rankings.

New State Top 20 Boys BB Rankings

Three teams in which the season is complete are replaced by two teams that are still alive plus Corona Centennial, which now has to go back in as the best team not to participate in the regional playoffs and has wins over two potential state champs.

Serra of Gardena is the week’s only newcomer in a week of few changes. That should change next week because four of the top 10 could be facing off in the CIFSS Division I-AA quarterfinals. One top 20 team also gets inexplicable low seed in its section playoffs.

State’s No. 4 ranked team outlasts strong field to capture crown at first ever Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas. No. 7 Bishop O’Dowd takes fifth place.
