McDonald’s: Johnson & Welsh In
Forward Stanley Johnson from Mater Dei of Santa Ana was chosen for the 2014 McDonald’s All-American boys team. Also chosen is center Tom Welsh of Loyola (Los Angeles). Northern California is shut out on the boys’ side after having three selections last season.
Boys BB: Monarchs No. 1 contender
With its victory over Student Sports FAB 50 ranked Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia) at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., combined with some other results of showcase games at the event, has state No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana in serious contention for a boys basketball mythical national title.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame created a spinoff of its annual Massachussetts-based event in Phoenix — the Spalding Hoophall West. The state’s top-ranked boys basketball team, Mater Dei of Santa Ana, and Orange Lutheran participate in two-day event.
