McDonald’s: Johnson & Welsh In
Forward Stanley Johnson from Mater Dei of Santa Ana was chosen for the 2014 McDonald’s All-American boys team. Also chosen is center Tom Welsh of Loyola (Los Angeles). Northern California is shut out on the boys’ side after having three selections last season.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame created a spinoff of its annual Massachussetts-based event in Phoenix — the Spalding Hoophall West. The state’s top-ranked boys basketball team, Mater Dei of Santa Ana, and Orange Lutheran participate in two-day event.

No. 2 St. John Bosco of Bellflower wraps up its first ever CIF Southern Section title with a dominant 34-7 victory over state No. 5 Mater Dei of Santa Ana in the Pac-Five title game. The unbeaten Braves assuredly will earn a SoCal Open Division bowl game berth.
