Preseason 50: Teams 1-15

It shouldn’t be a surprise that St. John Bosco of Bellflower is No. 1 and De La Salle of Concord is No. 2 to start the 2014 season. The great news is that so many of the top-ranked teams are continuing to play each other early and often.

A first-year coach like no other

Justin Alumbaugh has helped make it a seamless transition in his first season as De La Salle’s new head coach after the retirement of Bob Ladouceur. Coach Lad is still on the sidelines of California’s No. 1 team, but Alumbaugh is clearly the one in charge.

Mr. Football 2012: Michael Hutchings

Linebacker for the Spartans also turned heads on special teams and made big plays in the last three CIF Open Division state bowl games. He’s the fourth State Player of the Year from the school.
