It’s time to launch our winter basketball content on CalHiSports.com and Mater Dei of Santa Ana has the best player and is the best bet to start in the No. 1 position for the the 2013-14 season. The Monarchs will be gunning for a historic fourth straight CIF title in California’s highest classification.

State School of the Year: Mater Dei

Serra of Gardena led with three CIF state titles, but this time Mater Dei’s overall excellence beats the Cavaliers and every other school in California. It’s the Monarchs’ fourth State School of the Year honor.

Mr. Basketball 2013: Aaron Gordon

State’s top honor goes to Archbishop Mitty of San Jose standout for the second consecutive year by a whisker over Mater Dei’s Stanley Johnson. Gordon is only the sixth two-time winner since 1956.

Cal-Hi Sports State Teams of the Year

Mater Dei boys, Bishop O’Dowd girls named state’s top basketball teams. For Mater Dei, it’s the third consecutive honor, while Lady Dragons are first Oakland school to earn nod since 1988.

CIF Open Boys: Three in a row also is No. 10 for Mater Dei

Stanley Johnson and Aaron Gordon both put on a show in first CIF Open Division state final. Johnson’s 26 points leads SoCal team to victory, making coach Gary McKnight’s program the first to win three straight state titles in the top division.

New State Top 20 Boys BB Rankings

The big game in the CIF’s new open division won’t be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup, but the winner will assuredly be the Cal-Hi Sports State Team of the Year. Mitty’s big win over Sheldon is also good news for Serra of San Mateo, one of four newcomers in the next-to-last state rankings.
