Since the prerequisite for this honor is for the athlete to simply attend a California high school (not compete for one of its teams), the all-around silver medalist from last October’s World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and a leader of USA national team becomes too much for any other girl to beat.

More State Schools of the Year
Archbishop Mitty and Torrey Pines continue back-and-forth duel in girls sports with Mitty getting the nod this time. Other schools ending with special honors include St. John Bosco (D2), Chaminade (D3), Central Catholic of Modesto (D4) and St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda (D5). Fifteen more schools also gain special mention for overall athletic excellence.

Since the end of the spring baseball and softball seasons, several top coaches have announced their retirements, which is always helpful for our state record compiling because when they do their totals are usually mentioned as well.
