Ms. Softball 2016: Nicole Bates

The Ceres High infielder nudged Gatorade National Player of the Year Madilyn Nickles of Merced for top local honor in Stanislaus/Merced County and does the same for state’s highest, longest-running individual softball selection. It’s another tough choice in a sport that has seen several of them in recent years.

More Softball Players of the Year

In addition to Nicole Bates, statewide honors also are going out to Camryn Ybarra of Mission Viejo (juniors), Vanessa Strong from Freedom of Oakley (sophs), Kinzie Hansen of Norco (frosh), Madilyn Nickles of Merced (large schools) and Kailia Searcy from Paraclete of Lancaster (small schools).

Softball Coach of Year: Judy Shaubach

Her teams have won two straight CIF Central Section championships and she’s approaching 600 all-time wins since 1989. Add it all up and Madera’s Judy Shaubach gets the nod as the State Softball Coach of the Year. She’s also the first from her section to earn this honor since 1981.
