REV It Up: Bruich State Coach of Year
For the first time on the list of state football coaches of the year that stretches back more than 100 years, we have a father-son combination as Redlands East Valley’s Kurt Bruich is the honoree for the 2014 season. His father, Dick, received the same honor after the 1989 season.

Here are the choices from among those schools considered medium-size and small. It’s the second straight year our medium schools honoree guided a 16-0 squad. Our top small schools coach, meanwhile, is busy this week in Florida helping coach at the Under Armour All-American Game.

Mr. Basketball 2014: Stanley Johnson
No surprise here, but it is now official as Mater Dei’s four-year standout joins all-time state list that extends back to 1905 and includes others such as Bill Sharman, Paul Silas, Bill Walton, Bill Cartwright, Jason Kidd, Paul Pierce, Tyson Chandler, Kawhi Leonard and Aaron Gordon.

We choose honorees for seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen and for each CIF division. Bishop O’Dowd’s Ivan Rabb actually is on top for two classifications while for the third straight year, the frosh honoree is from the San Fernando Valley.
State Coach of Year: Doug Mitchell
His teams at Bishop Montgomery of Torrance have now won three CIF state titles, he’s closing in on 600 career victories and this year’s squad did it without much size after losing eight seniors from the year before.
