More State Schools of the Year

Archbishop Mitty and Torrey Pines continue back-and-forth duel in girls sports with Mitty getting the nod this time. Other schools ending with special honors include St. John Bosco (D2), Chaminade (D3), Central Catholic of Modesto (D4) and St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda (D5). Fifteen more schools also gain special mention for overall athletic excellence.

There’s no debate needed for the final No. 1 ranking as unbeaten Division I state champ Granite Bay has a head-to-head win over Division II state champ Archbishop Mitty of San Jose.

It’s all set up for a superb set of CIF state finals on Saturday at Santiago Canyon College. Which Division I or Division II champion will end up No. 1 in the state overall? There are arguments for all four finalists entering the weekend.

NEW State Girls Volleyball Top 20

The only upset in Tuesday’s CIF regional playoffs is in Division II in the south where Whittier Christian defeats La Costa Canyon. We also choose early between Santiago and Los Al for state No. 1 if those two win CIF state titles.

Tuesday night section playoff results are included in this week’s rankings, including wins by No. 1 Granite Bay plus No. 4 Los Alamitos and No. 6 Mater Dei winning in the CIFSS Division IAA semifinals.

History Made In State Girls VB Top 20

Thanks to Archbishop Mitty winning at the Santa Barbara TOC, unbeaten Granite Bay moves up to No. 1 in the state, which is believed to be the first time ever for a team from the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.
