La Jolla Country Day blows past Troy to move back into elite statewide list. The Torreys face No. 1 Windward next, which will not have played in 12 days. Long Beach Poly, Ridgeview and Lynwood moving up as well.

It’s a good thing that Cathedral Catholic began with a win on Tuesday, otherwise Harvard-Westlake and St. Francis would be in a close battle for the No. 1 ranking. Highest-ranked newcomer is Serra of San Mateo.

Ridgeview of Bakersfield leads group of three newcomers as section championship week starts on Wednesday. One of the most intriguing questions heading into next week is which four CIF Southern Section teams will end up in the new CIF SoCal Open Division playoffs.

A group of three newcomers this week are led by red-hot La Verne Lutheran, and also include Deer Valley and La Costa Canyon. Corona Centennial, L.A. Loyola and L.A. Windward are out after losing in respective section quarterfinals.

CIFSS Division I-AA playoffs features seven teams from the state top 20, which means that it won’t take long for some of them to lose, thus creating a lot of movement in the rankings. There were no changes in this week’s pecking order.

Serra of Gardena is the week’s only newcomer in a week of few changes. That should change next week because four of the top 10 could be facing off in the CIFSS Division I-AA quarterfinals. One top 20 team also gets inexplicable low seed in its section playoffs.
