State Stat Stars of the Week
Two of our stat stars this week also are currently being considered for all-state basketball teams: Chase Watkins of Watsonville St. Francis and Brooke Panfili of Lafayette Acalanes. This week’s baseball honor roll also includes pitchers with ERAs of 0.25, 0.25 and 0.19, including one sophomore from Vista Murrieta who beat state’s No. 2-ranked team. […]
SoCal/NorCal Players of the Week
Have you ever heard of a baseball player who has hit for the cycle in back-to-back games and then later in the same season comes up with 11 RBI in one game? You have now with Etiwanda’s Steven Rivas, this week’s SoCal baseball POW. This week’s other honorees are from Ventura, Vacaville and Sacramento.
NEW Softball State Top 20
Three of this week’s four newcomer slots have gone to teams from Ventura County, which already had unbeaten Rio Mesa sitting in the top five. Elk Grove also makes a major move after winning the top divisional title at the NorCal Classic. Norco, Los Alamitos and Gahr, meanwhile, continue to hold the top three positions....
State Stat Stars of the Week
We ran out of time to get last week’s honor roll posted due to Mr. Basketball State POY announcement, but have two weeks rolled into one for this post. In baseball, Ashwin Chona of Sage Hill (Newport Beach) gets a two-hit shutout, but did not throw a fourth straight no-hitter. Alex Reelfs of Los Altos […]
NorCal/SoCal Players of the Week
Leading the way among this week’s fearsome foursome is San Bruno of Capuchino’s Aiden Yarwood, who pitched his second no-hitter of the season. The CIF Central Coast Section also gets a sweep with the softball honoree from NorCal coming from Mountain View St. Francis. This week’s two SoCal picks are from CIF Southern Section schools […]
NEW Softball State Top 20
Compared to previous weeks, this was a somewhat quiet one for the state’s top softball teams. We did have to figure out what to do with Orange Lutheran as the Lancers had to drop from No. 3 after suffering a league loss to Mater Dei of Santa Ana. There also was the difficulty of choosing...
SoCal/NorCal Players of the Week
One of this week’s honorees, Gianna “Gigi” Mancha from Central of Fresno generates national headlines by striking out 21 batters (every out) in a seven-inning no-hitter against Clovis West. We have details in her writeup about where that ranks in state history. Our other selections this week are from La Puente, Cerritos and Santa Cruz.
NEW Softball State Top 20
Go ahead, call us homers. But it just worked out doing these rankings the same way we’ve done them for 30-plus years that three teams from San Joaquin County (our home base) have landed in the State Top 20 for softball. It doesn’t look like that’s happened before. At the top of the heap, meanwhile,...
State Stat Stars of the Week
Port of L.A.’s Analise De La Rocca resumes her record-breaking with an eight-RBI game and a 15-for-15 strikeout perfect game while another of softball’s best this week is Tulare Mission Oak’s Mariah Mazon, who hits her 30th career homer. In baseball, Jack Williams of Bakersfield Christian goes 6-for-6 in one game with six runs scored […]
NorCal/SoCal Players of the Week
It’s a sad reason why we wanted to pick a softball player from Millennium of Tracy this season, but we’ve got a good one who already has state record book totals for career RBI and career homers. This week’s other honorees are from San Jose, San Juan Capistrano and San Diego.
