CIF Central Sec: Taking a shot at DLS

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top players & teams from the recent week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

FOOTBALL

Senior Cannon Eames of Yosemite High (Oakhurst) had a night to remember. He scored four different ways, a rare accomplishment for a high school player, in 40-14 win against Mariposa. Eames made two field goals that measured 23 yards each, made 3-of-4 PATs, caught three touchdown passes on six receptions for 184 yards, and had an interception return for a 40-yard touchdown. He accounted for 33 of his team’s 40 points.

Senior Joseph Garcia of Strathmore rushed for a season high of 286 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns, one touchdown going for 88 yards, in a 35-13 win vs. Orosi. Based on last year, it probably won’t last as Joseph’s season high for long. He is averaging 17.5 yards per carry for the season.

Sophomore Kendall Milton of Buchanan put on a show by rushing for a career high of 248 yards on 17 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of 19, 60, 47, 46 yards in a 34-28 win over visiting Liberty of Bakersfield.

Senior running back Gonzalo Rodriguez of Golden West (Visalia) rushed for a game high of 230 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Trailblazers beat visiting Madera South 61-0.

Quarterback Braden Wingle of Bakersfield Christian passed for a season high of 386 yards on 27 of 42 and had four touchdowns as the Eagles beat Tehachapi 39-13. Wingle also will likely beat that total for this season later on.

Junior quarterback Trent Tompkins continues to lead the No. 1 team in the Central Section by passing for 338 yards on 17 of 23 and had three touchdowns as the Grizzlies beat visiting Ridgeview of Bakersfield 56-3. Senior running back Jevon Bigelow had a fine game as well by scoring three touchdowns on runs of 53, 7, & 6 yards and rushed for 105 yards on 10 carries.

Central plays at De La Salle (Concord) next Saturday night. Can they become the second team from the Central Section to defeat De La Salle on their home field as Clovis West did in 2004? That win over the Spartans came in the next game following the conclusion of the Spartans’ national record 151-game win streak at Qwest Field in Seattle. The Golden Eagles then hosted DLS in 2005 and won again, this time 7-0 as Chris Lewis scored on a 43 yard run in the fourth quarter in a 7-0 win. DLS has many wins over Central Section teams as well, including Bakersfield and Buchanan.

Speaking of Clovis West, QB Dante Chachere continues to settle in as the Golden Eagles’ replacement for injured big-time prospect Adrian Martinez. He led the Golden Eagles to an impressive 42-12 win over a Rocklin team that was 3-0 and earlier posted a win against perennial power Grant of Sacramento. Chachere ended a phenomenal 29 of 31 passing for 289 yards and one score.

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Natera of Hanford West set three school records by passing for 449 yards on 29 of 39 and had five touchdowns plus 51 yards rushing. Junior Jayron Jenkins led the ground game with 18 carries for 167 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 55-18 win over Sierra Pacific.

Junior quarterback Alex Trujillo led San Joaquin Memorial past Garces of Bakersfield in the Holy Bowl 49-42 as he went 17 of 24 for 329 yards and three touchdowns for the game. Jalen McMillan had eight receptions for 176 yards and one touchdown.

Big Games This Week (involving both teams from the section): Granite Bay at Del Oro; Central Catholic at Manteca; Grant at Franklin.

Note of the Week: At the end of last season, St. Mary’s of Stockton was scheduled to be hosting national powerhouse St. John Bosco of Bellflower on the Sept. 22-23 weekend for this season. The Rams played and lost at St. John Bosco 55-16 last season. The Braves then got the opportunity to play at St. John’s of Washington D.C. for the same weekend. After some negotiating and searching, a replacement was found for St. Mary’s: Bosco league rival Mater Dei of Santa Ana. Officials at both St. Mary’s and Mater Dei then agreed to have their game moved to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. While the Rams already have a loss to Central Catholic of Modesto, the Monarchs already have a win over 2016 mythical national champ Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas and are the consensus No. 1 team in the nation.

Chuckles: Our Little Champion

If you don’t enjoy tributes to lost pets, just don’t read this post. But if you know what we’re going through, you know. On Friday, our own living, mascot for Cal-Hi Sports, Chuckles, a black pug mix we had for 11 ½ years, died after a short illness.

Some believe that most people, if they’re lucky, may have three great dogs in the course of their lifetime. There’s that first one you have when you’re growing up in childhood and perhaps you have into college years. There’s the second one when your own kid or kids are growing up. And there’s maybe a third one you have in your golden years.

For my family, I lost the second great dog of my life and the first great dog of son Sean’s life on Friday when we had to put him to rest with probably just a few hours left in his life. The dog’s name was Chuckles, but he had a myriad of other nicknames, including Chuckles McGinty, Ginty, Ginterkins, Pupper and more.

When you have a website like this one, you try not to show everyone when there’s difficult times. Hopefully, the only difference in our coverage during the week was that there was no stat stars, record book column. It was just easier — and proved to be very timely — to run the feature story I had written a few weeks ago for my friends at SportStars Magazine about Mission Viejo’s Olaijah Griffin.

Chuckles first showed symptoms that there might be something very wrong on Tuesday of last week. He just seemed to be having balance issues while walking. He was taken to the vet on Wednesday and after a few tests and x-rays the bad news was revealed: a tumor was in his stomach. My wife, Kathleen Moody, and I probably would have had him euthanized that day to save him from any suffering, but there was a complicating factor. Sean was in Reno attending classes at the University of Nevada. Chuckles was his dog more than anyone else’s, a dog who was actually sleeping on his bed with him for almost every day since March of 2006 when we adopted him from the local shelter until August of 2014 when Sean went off to college for his freshman year. We wanted Sean, a 2014 grad from Lincoln (Stockton), to be here for his dog’s final hours so we took Chuckles home and basically became hospice nurses for him.

It was heart-breaking to see Chuckles’ decline so rapidly as the week went on. The vet didn’t actually say it, but I think the cancer got into his brain, first impacting his motor skills. He was able to raise his shoulders on Wednesday to eat pulled pork out of the crockpot for what ended up being his last great meal.

Kathleen was absolutely incredible in her care for Chuckles in the last days. We spoon fed him water and had to carry him outside for attempts at urination. It was no way for a dog to live, but we were on a mission. C’mon, buddy, hang in there. Sean will be home soon.

The earliest Sean could get home we thought was going to be 1 p.m. on Friday. By Thursday night, we weren’t sure Chuckles would last. Sean sent a text on Friday morning before 7 that he was on his way. He later said he wasn’t sleeping anyway. He got home at 9:30 a.m.

Chuckles was breathing when Sean opened the door from the garage. The dog had a noticeable reaction, his ears going up and his eyes opening wider. He hadn’t had any reactions like that earlier in the morning. The former boy with his best friend were able to spend some time together with Sean whispering in Chuckles’ ear. We knew how hard that was for Sean, but we also knew somehow, someway that it was comforting for Chuckles.

Sean wasn’t sure what to expect upon seeing his childhood dog in this condition. We had decided to let him make some of Chuckles’ end-of-life decisions as much as possible. He is 21 going on 22. Now that he had made it home in time, part of this journey was over. The other part was still to come.

Saturday at 2 p.m. was previously set up as the appointment of the vet technician to come to the house. The folks at Rosemarie Pet Hospital in Stockton were awesome through this entire ordeal and told us they don’t usually perform euthanizations as house calls, but Chuckles was a patient of theirs for many years. Sean later said after the three of us saw Chuckles begin to have muscle spasms and wimper a few times that he felt compelled to see about having the vet come earlier. We called at 2 p.m. on Friday and the appointment was made for 3 p.m.

One of the most amazing aspects of the entire experience was seeing how the dog reacted almost at the exact time we knew that his little life was going to be ending in a short time. No more muscle spasms. Just comfortable breathing.

The technicians, Edgar and Martha, were professional and compassionate. So was Pfianny of the Rosemarie staff. When it was over, we just had them carry Chuckles out to their vehicle on the pad he was on when he passed. We certainly were not going to use that pad for anything else again.

Chuckles was our little champion because of how he fought to the end to stay with us until Sean came home. He was our little champion because of how he helped Sean, as an only child, grow up. He was our little champion because of how he helped us cope in those first two years when Sean had started college. He was just a great little fella who will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Note of the Week: Oakdale’s last loss at the Corral before falling to Folsom last Friday was in October of 2013 to Manteca 35-20 in a game that Cal-Hi Sports attended. It also was the 100th career win for Manteca head coach Eric Reis, who had not won there before. The two teams have byes this week and then the following week it will be Manteca going to the Corral. Will Oakdale lose two in a row at home? The odds aren’t good for the Buffs if you look at it that way, but you never know.

What We Learned: DLS-St. Francis

At least on this night, not having an effective passing game shows that the Spartans still have a way to go to get close to the CIF Open Division championship level of St. John Bosco and Bosco’s league rivals from Mater Dei. Their front seven on defense, however, could end up being equal to many of the best in school history. For St. Francis, we’ve now watched the Lancers along with WCAL rivals Valley Christian and San Mateo Serra and it looks like the preseason hunch about them being the best in CCS was correct.
