Sac-Joaquin Section Top 5: DLs
Boys BB: Introducing 2021 Class
Our boys basketball coverage for Gold Club VIPs continues with a first look at the state’s top incoming ninth-graders. The freshman (2021) class has some elite talent in the post and on the wing, but a top-flight pass-first point guard has yet to emerge. Many in the group are already mature and it’s important to keep that in mind when projecting future success, especially for post players who often develop later. Some of the state’s better freshmen also won’t contribute right away because they are joining strong programs with veteran players.

The first 2021 Cal-Hi Sports Top 25 for the 2017-18 school year is based on evaluations from this past summer’s NCAA viewing periods and non-viewing showcases and middle school events over the past year.
The baseline of where we begin with each prospect begins with high school basketball, so keep that in mind when you view the initial rankings for the 2021 class because none of them have played a regulation varsity basketball game yet. These rankings will expand as we see varsity games this winter and change over time as players develop and new ones emerge during the 2017-18 high school season. Cal-Hi Sports realizes some talented ninth-graders will sit behind talented upperclassmen, while a select few remain in junior high this school year. We did not factor in projected playing time with the high school team into our rankings. We also realize not every 2021 prospect participated in a spring or summer showcase or with their high school team this fall and we might not have had an opportunity to evaluate them. That’s why we limit this list to 25 players.
There was many prospects we considered for the top spot, but when the dust settled we went with power forward Wilhelm Dorsz from Mater Dei of Santa Ana. Dorsz is expected to contribute quality minutes for the state’s preseason No. 1 ranked team. The 6-foot-8 Dorsz is aggressive, competitive and excels with a variety of post moves, including a sweeping left hand hook shot. He had some impressive moments for the Monarchs this summer and fall, including at the Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic.

Raiders: No time to panic after loss
In the NFL, bad days happen to the best of teams. Time will tell if what happened in Washington D.C. was an aberration or a sign of things to come.
After opening the season with two impressive wins, the Oakland Raiders suffered their first loss of the new season at the hands of a ruthless Washington Redskins team. While there were few bright spots to come out of the 27-10 defeat, there are a number of reasons why Raiders’ fans shouldn’t be reaching for the panic button just yet. That said, Oakland will be well aware that it can’t afford to perform like it did in Washington. The signs weren’t good from the beginning of the night, and the truth of the matter is that Oakland was actually lucky to end the game with 10 points.
All of the Raiders’ points came thanks to mistakes by the Redskins. Aside from those errors, though, Washington was at the top of its game. From the moment Oakland’s Derek Carr (Bakersfield Christian) threw an interception to Montae Nicholson, the writing was on the wall. The Raiders’ quarterback wasn’t looked after all night by his offensive line, while his opposite number Kirk Cousins produced a sensational performance as the hosts began to really run away with the game.
As long as they bounce back from this loss, head coach Jack Del Rio’s men are still in very good shape to achieve their targets this season. With odds of around 7/1 with Betfair to top the AFC, the Raiders could be a decent shout for those looking to make use of the latest free bets. The first defeat of the season had to come at some point, and maybe it’s good it has come so early in the campaign. And, in Cousins, the Redskins have a quarterback who is capable of tearing apart any defense in the league on his best day.
While Oakland will face better teams than Washington this year, the Redskins are definitely good enough to reach the playoffs, and the Raiders will be hoping to join them there. With the Denver Broncos next up for Oakland, coming off its own first loss of the year, the team will have a great chance to bounce right back and beat another team expected to reach the postseason. This disappointing defeat against Washington will soon be forgotten should the Raiders respond with a solid win against the Broncos.
With three home games coming up after their trip to Denver, Oakland will be hoping to head into its round 10 bye week with the future in its own hands. If they are still in contention by then, Raiders fans will be able to get excited with justification about what the rest of the season has in store for them.

What We Learned: Freedom-O’Dowd
All-State running back Ronnie Rivers may be gone, but Freedom of Oakley hasn’t lost much on offense compared to last year’s team that won 11 in a row and was top 10 in state until back-to-back losses to De La Salle and St. Mary’s of Stockton. At least that was the main takeaway after watching the Falcons defeat Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland on Friday night. The Dragons probably will lose again in their next game to De La Salle, but shouldn’t be discounted for CIF North Coast Section D3 playoffs where the winner may very well add a CIF state title.
