Boys BB: CIFSS Open Predictions

We break down the eight teams in boys basketball that should be selected for the CIF Southern Section’s Open Division playoffs. It’s the fifth season for the massive section’s open division and it’s probably a good thing the section reduced the amount of teams because had it remained 16, the bottom seeded teams wouldn’t have been at the level we saw when the concept began in 2013-2014. The field should include seven teams ranked in this week’s Cal-Hi Sports State Top 20.

Congratulations to the following players listed in alphabetical order who have been selected to either second team overall or third team (large schools) on the 2017 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Football Teams, presented by Blast Athletics. These players and their families can now order an official 2017 all-state football patch plus you’ll get a certificate through our partners at BillyTees.com. We also wanted to post the names on a list so we’re not collecting a subscription from a parent who is only interested in seeing if their son has been picked and then finds out the son wasn’t picked. Central Sec: Another show for Jalen

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top coaches, players & teams from the past week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sophomore Jalen Green from San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno put on a show last Friday night by scoring a game high of 32 points, 26 coming in the first half, in an 80-53 win over visiting Sanger. Green also scored 15 points & had 12 rebounds in a blowout win over Edison of Fresno 78-50 earlier in the week. Teammate 6-foot-7 senior Dameane Douglas contributed 26 points & 15 points in both games.

Senior Bryan Paredes of Tulare Western scored a game high of 32 points in a 77-52 win over Delano. Western then suffered its first East Yosemite League loss to Porterville 61-59 in a game that Paredes scored 18 points.

Junior Edward Turner of Foothill (Bakersfield) scored a season high of 30 points and pulled down 17 rebounds and had 11 blocks in a 72-58 win over North of Bakersfield.

Justin Greiner of Centennial (Bakersfield) scored a game high of 33 points in a 64-60 win over Stockdale to get last week going. Justin also scored a game high of 25 points in an 81-52 win over Garces. He has made 102 three-pointers for the season and last week was the Cal-Hi Sports NorCal Player of the Week.

It may have been a low-scoring game, but Aymar Cazares of Mira Monte (Bakersfield) scored a career high of 30 points in a 51-50 win over South of Bakersfield.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Here’s one that already has been recognized by Cal-Hi Sports for the NorCal Player of the Wek honor. It’s for junior Kiara Brown of Tulare, who set three school records by scoring 46 points, pulling down 30 rebounds and making 20 three throws in a 72-64 win over Monache of Porterville. In the second game of the week, Brown scored 24 points and had 20 rebounds in a 61-14 win over Delano.

Junior Madison Campbell of Clovis West (Fresno) scored a game high of 33 points in a 68-23 win over Central of Fresno. Madison also scored 12 points in a 63-24 win against Buchanan. Clovis West pushed its league winning streak to 57 consecutive wins.

Finally, senior Kendi Baxter-Jones of Exeter scored a season high of 33 points in an 80-67 win over Kingsburg.

Boys BB: Cal City’s 165-point night

California City won its Friday night boys basketball game at Frazier Mountain of Lebec by the whopping score of 165-38. That is a new state record for most points in a single game. As usual with single game records, however, questions about running up the score have to be asked. The answers may not be known until later in the upcoming week.

CIF Central Sec: Stapp steps up

Here’s some record updates and highlights of top coaches, players & teams from the past two weeks as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.

COACHES WATCH

Tulare Union’s Mark Hatton and Brad Felder of Hanford both reached 500 career wins two weeks ago. Hatton was the first, which came on Tuesday January 16, when Tulare beat Delano 68-37. Felder’s came on Friday, January 19 when the Bullpups topped Lemoore 80-69.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Senior Ronnie Stapp of Bakersfield scored a career high by scoring 31 points in a 91-45 blowout win last week over Stockdale. Stapp also scored 21 points and had a season high of 12 rebounds in a losing effort against Liberty of Bakersfield (66-60).

Senior Tiveon Stroud of Selma became the third player on the team to score 1,000 career points. Tiveon scored 15 points in a 71-56 win over Kingsburg and now has 1,002 career points.

Max Robledo of Baker had a big week by scoring 32 points, hitting six 3-pointers and getting 13 rebounds & seven steals in a tough loss to Immanuel Christian (63-61). Max came back with 29 points with seven 3-pointers & 11 rebounds in a 67-45 win over Owens Valley.

From a game two weeks ago, senior Jose Bautista of Arvin set a school record by scoring 50 points to go along with eight 3-pointers on 17-of-48 attempts in a 75-74 losing effort against Kennedy of Delano.

Junior captain Raymond Paramo of Farmersville had a nice week two weeks ago by scoring 30 points in a 67-33 win over Kings Christian of Lemoore and then had a career high of 35 points in a 69-63 win over Wonderful Academy.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Junior Madison Campbell has set another school record at Clovis West of Fresno as she pushed her season total of 3-pointers to 95. That achievement came in the game after the Golden Eagles beat Clovis North in a showdown of state-ranked squads. Madison passed Kristi Fulton, who made 94 3-pointers in 1991. Clovis West beat Clovis 43-34 in the second game and pushed its Tri-River Athletic Conference win streak to 54, the second longest in school history and approaching the record of 58 from 2005-11.

Kiara Brown of Tulare had quite a week by scoring 27 points, grabbing 28 rebounds & posting seven blocks in a 52-66 loss to a fine Mission Oak of Tulare squad. In the second game of the week, she scored 35 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in a 68-42 win over Tulare Western. Kiara is averaging 26.2 for the season.

Jazmine Soto of Strathmore became the third freshman in section history to score 600 points in a season when she scored 18 points in a 61-40 win over Granite Hills of Porterville. Soto also had a big night against Lindsay by scoring a game high of 31 points and had 10 steals & made 10 free throws in a 68-39 win. Soto is averaging 25.3 for the season with 605 points.

In an effort from two weeks ago that helped her get named as the Cal-Hi Sports NorCal Player of the Week, senior MaryJane Jones of East Bakersfield set a school record by scoring 52 points in a 74-52 victory against Tehachapi. That also ties her for the third most points scored in Central Section history. MaryJane also had 10 rebounds, 10 assists & made 13 of 17 free throws.

Lanie Jackson of Bakersfield Christian scored a career high of 39 points and had nine assists for the game in a 66-41 win over Arvin.

Junior Hannah Hurley of Kern Valley is continuing to lead the section in scoring. She scored 35 points and had 10 rebounds two weeks ago in a 62-52 loss to Desert of Edwards AFB.

Felicia Ramirez of Caruthers had one of the state’s top triple-doubles of the season so far with 37 points, 14 steals & 14 rebounds in a 89-15 win over Riverdale.

Finally, in another game from two weeks ago, Aliyah Johnson of North Bakersfield scored a season high of 34 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Stars beat Mira Monte of Bakersfield.

Gary McKnight’s HOF numbers

All of the information below was done in support of Santa Ana Mater Dei boys basketball coach Gary McKnight getting a positive vote as a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame nominee. He has been nominated for the Class of 2018 and his high school accomplishments are more than comparable to the high school coaches who’ve previously been inducted. It was written up by Mater Dei supporter Bob Atwell with totals from team statistician Steve Colton. We support Bob’s work and have helped when asked for state record info. We hope Coach McKnight someday is accorded with this honor. The ultimate would be if he went in at the same time as former Alameda St. Joseph guard Jason Kidd, who is expected to be announced as an inductee for the Class of 2018 at NBA All-Star Weekend in a few weeks.

Girls BB: League streak ends at 219

Sonora of La Habra was expected to give Troy of Fullerton a great game on Wednesday night since both teams were ranked right next to each other with Troy at No. 8 and Sonora at No. 9 in this week’s Orange County Top 10 rankings.

Girls BB: 76 points for Latone

Destiny Littleton may no longer be scoring all those points for Bishop’s of La Jolla, but the San Diego Section has another who is rampaging this season. It’s Shyla Latone of Chula Vista Bonita Vista and on Friday she set a section record and moved to No. 4 on the all-time state list with a 76-point outburst during game against Hilltop.
