Pinewood, Windward win Open titles

It’s a stunner in the CIF NorCal Open Division girls basketball championship as Pinewood of Los Altos Hills goes to three overtimes to knock off previously unbeaten state No. 1 and national No. 1 Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. In the CIF SoCal Open title game, Windward of Los Angeles takes down defending Open Division […]

NorCal/SoCal Players of the Week

It’s our first chance this season to write about some of the most prolific, interesting and best baseball/softball players in the state through this weekly feature. One of them really is a Starr who hails from the fairly new school of Mountain House. The other three are from Valencia, San Jose and Atascadero.

NEW Girls BB State Top 20

The final eight for the CIF Open Division is set, and after the way it shook out those eight teams have risen to the final eight spots for the state rankings and will stay there, although it might not be in the same position for the final rankings as we have them in this week’s...

SoCal/NorCal Players of the Week

It’s our final chance to write about boys and girls hoopsters for this feature, since it’s switching to baseball and softball next week. One of them was previously an all-state freshman, another was previously the State Freshman Player of the Year. The final four, so to speak, are from Chino Hills, Spring Valley, Reedley and […]

NEW Girls BB State Top 20

We do and always have done the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings (more than 35 years) independent to whatever seemingly yearly changing system the CIF uses to do its regional playoff seedings. After seeing some of the placements this time, one can only hope they will get the kinks out of a system that needs fixing....

The spotlight shines this week on Haley Jones (no, not the one you’re probably thinking about) as one of our four honorees. This Haley Jones is from West of Torrance and has led her team to a CIF Southern Section divisional final with big games last week against Long Beach Poly and Los Alamitos. This […]

NEW Girls BB State Top 20

There were no major upsets among the top teams going into this week’s semifinals and finals of the CIF section playoffs with ranked teams, but there was a State Top 20 team that lost in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section. The injury bug also has bitten and at this stage of the season that can change...

SoCal/NorCal Players of the Week

Setting a school record with 44 points is one thing, but doing it at a school like Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland (which won the CIF Open Division title just three years ago) with its rich history of great players is something else. That’s why we couldn’t let Naseem Gaskin’s huge outing from last week go […]

NEW Girls BB State Top 20

With this week’s playoffs now going on in all sections of the state and for all teams in the state rankings, it’s hard to believe the CIF Southern Section Open Division is already down to just four teams in the hunt for the championship. Including the four teams that lost in last Saturday’s quarterfinals, all...

NorCal/SoCal Players of the Week

It turned out to be the perfect week to do Oak Park’s Riley Battin for this feature since he only needs two rebounds in Friday’s game to reach 1,500 for his career and thus join a very select group of just three others in all of California prep history to have more than 2,500 points […]
