Among the best this week is a pitcher from Menlo-Atherton who threw a no-hitter for seven innings and then lost in extras. Plus, softball sluggers Dominique Jackson from Pleasant Valley of Chico and Briana Tautalafua of Carson both connect four times in two games.

BASEBALL
Matt Torretto (Trabuco Hills, Mission Viejo)
Some people who have gone to baseball games for 20 years have never seen a no-hitter in person so we will always give that accomplishment a lot of love. For Torretto, the junior pitcher tossed his first high school no-hittter and struck out six during a 4-0 win for the Mustangs over Tustin at the Ryan Lemmon Spring Invitational.
Joey Deceglie (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga)
Let’s hear it as well for Joey, who pitched a no-hitter during a 5-0 win for the Grizzlies over Etiwanda. In his no-no, he walked just one and struck out five.
Joel Mitchell (Ramona)
Mitchell had his streak of four games in a row with a home run come to an end earlier this week but during that streak he homered twice and drove in five runs during a 12-4 win over Mission Vista of Oceanside.
Brendt Citta (Leland, San Jose)
He went from home to second base quite often in a 18-4 win over Pioneer of San Jose. In the game, Citta he hit four doubles during a five-hit performance that also saw him drive in six runs.
Angelo Armenta (Loyola, Los Angles)
It wasn’t just a normal three hit game for this USC-bound shortstop as he homered twice, including the game-winning walk-off home run, during a 7-6 win in nine innnings over Crespi. Loyola started this week ranked No. 1 in the state.
Caeden Barnes (Upland Christian Academy, Rancho Cucamonga)
Already with a five-RBI game this season, he did even better during Upland Christian’s 30-0 win over California School for the Deaf of Riverside. In the game, Barnes went 6 for 7 with a home run and six runs batted in. Earlier this week, he also homered twice and drove in five runs during a 16-5 win over Sherman Indian of Riverside.
Ben Kaser (Cleveland, Reseda)
Kaser was throwing lasers in the Cavaliers’ 6-0 shutout win over Granada Hills in a West Valley League game. In addition to the seven-strikeout shutout, Kaser also shined at the plate with four RBIs.
Matt Toscano (Willow Glen, San Jose)
Not content with just staying at first base, he stole four bases during a three-hit performance as the Rams defeated Burlingame 12-0. Willow Glen lost some talented seniors off last year’s team that won the CCS Division III title, but has remained one of the top teams in the section.
Corby Punian (Bellarmine, San Jose)
Allowing just three hits, he struck out nine during a shutout performance on the mound during a 3-0 win for the Bells over St. Ignatius of San Francisco.
Alex Diaz (Foothill, Santa Ana)
Leading the offensive attack in a doubleheader sweep against Esperanza of Anaheim, he went 6 for 8 with three home runs, five runs scored and five runs batted in.
Matthew McGarry (Menlo-Atherton, Atherton)
It was tough luck for McGarry in the Bears’ 3-0 loss in eight innings to Sacred Heart Prep. In the first seven innings, he threw a no-hitter but an infield single in the eighth led to the defeat.
Will Johnston (Sacred Heart Prep, Atherton)
While fellow state stat star Matthew McGarry was literally not allowing any hits in seven innings, Johnston matched the zeros put up on the scoreboard and ended up with an eight-inning shutout win. After the game, Johnston lowered his ERA to 0.60 for the season.
SOFTBALL
Dominique Jackson (Pleasant Valley, Chico)
We decided not to wait for next week to mention her performance on Tuesday during a doubleheader against Chico. Jackson, a returning all-state pick, had six hits and drove in seven runs in the two wins but the big number was that she hit two home runs in each game and combined on the day hit for the home run cycle.
Brianna Tautalafua (Carson)
At one point this season, she homered in seven straight games so after two games without a home run she broke out in a big way last week as she homered twice and drove in six runs during a 17-0 win over Gardena. Tautalafua then hit two more home runs while driving in five runs during a 23-7 win over Narbonne of Harbor City. On the season, she has 14 home runs and 39 runs batted in.
Emily Oestreich (Vintage, Napa)
It wasn’t quite 17 strikeouts like she had earlier in the season but she did allow just two hits and one unearned run while striking out 16 during a 14-1 win over Armijo of Fairfield. Oestreich was the ace of last year’s team that won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title and is continuing to shine even though the Crushers haven’t been able to play as a team quite like they did last year.
Bynne Fitzpatrick (Valley Christian, San Jose)
A force at the plate or in the circle, she hit a two run home runs during a 4-1 win over Notre Dame of Belmont and pitched a no-hitter earlier in the week while striking out 16 during a 2-1 win over Presentation of San Jose.
Johanna Grauer (Amador Valley, Pleasanton)
One of the frontrunners to be named Cal-Hi Sports Ms. Softball State Player of the Year at the end of the season, she struck out 14 and allowed just two hits during a 1-0 win over Monte Vista of Danville.
Desiree Severance (Archbishop Mitty, San Jose)
In the circle or at the plate, she is a big part of the success that the Monarchs are having this season. She pitched a no-hitter during a 4-0 win over St. Francis and also homered and drove in three runs during a 5-4 win over St. Ignatius.
Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove)
One of the top home run hitters this season not just in Orange County but in the state, this San Diego State-bound slugger had two home runs and four runs batted in during a 18-0 win over Bolsa Grande. That performance increased her home run total on the year to eight, which she has since added on to.
Jessica Garcia (Hughson)
A returning all-state small schools selection, Garcia is continuing to hammer the ball for the Huskies. After she smacked a pair of triples and had three RBI in a 10-4 win last week against Hilmar, she went 2-for-3 with a homer and five RBI when Hughson defeated Riverbank 13-0.
Rachel Metzger (Garces, Bakersfield)
Already with one home run in her first 10 games this season, she had her first multi-homer game with two and drove in four runs during a 12-1 win over East Bakersfield.
Kiana Pancino (Edison, Huntington Beach)
As the Chargers moved to 2-0 in Sunset League play with a 13-0 win over Newport Harbor, this sophomore pitcher tossed a five-inning perfect game to go along with 11 strikeouts.
Marina Felipe (McFarland)
One of the top strikeout pitchers in the state with 216 on the season, she struck out a season-high 17 batters during a 12-1 win over Orosi. She also had four hits and drove in a run.
Ashley Ross (Cypress)
Not allowing a hit while in the circle, she finished with nine strikeouts during a 10-0 win over Valencia of Placentia. She has signed with Boston College.
Makenna Young (Hanford West, Hanford)
Driving in a season-high six runs, she had two hits, including a home run, during a 12-0 win over Lemoore last Thursday. Once we start the divisional state rankings for softball, Hanford West will be a team to watch in Division II.
Kolby Romaine (Rosary, Fullerton)
This Missouri-commit had a fine performance in her first game of the season as she hit three doubles and drove in two runs during a 4-1 win over JSerra of San Juan Capistrano.
