NEW BOYS BASKETBALL
TOP 20 OVERALL RANKINGS
There are no new teams in this week’s rankings, but some movement as Etiwanda jumps up to No. 2 after correctly being seeded in front of Corona Centennial in the new CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs.
The CIF Southern Section and L.A. City teams will begin the playoffs this week with most of the state beginning the following week.
With 13 teams in the CIFSS Open Division in our rankings, don’t expect to see a ton of teams drop out just because they lose in their playoff opener while other bubble teams in less competitive brackets roll in the early rounds.

NEW GIRLS BASKETBALL
TOP 20 OVERALL RANKINGS
There was very limited movement in this week’s State Top 20 with only two ranked teams losing. The biggest questions were how far to drop Gardena Serra after its loss to unranked Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, and which team should take the place of previous No. 20 McClatchy of Sacramento.
Serra ended up dropping three spots after that loss while Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley was selected as the lone newcomer.
Another big issue was how to handle the cancellation of a game that was supposed to be played last Thursday night between No. 4 St. Mary’s of Stockton and league rival McNair, which only lost by five points to the Rams earlier in the season. The contest, despite some reports, has yet to be determined if it will be a forfeit win for McNair or just a cancellation.
According to head coach Tom Gonsalves and in a story by Rich Estrada in the Stockton Record, the outcome of St. Mary’s walking off the court after an incident in the stands during the freshmen game is still up in the air. According to Estrada’s story, the league will decide on March 12 the disposition of the game and whether it is a forfeit or just wiped off the schedule.
“No decision has been made,” Gonsalves reiterated.
Gonsalves pulled his team after an alleged attack by a fan on the wife of the St. Mary’s freshmen coach.
“There is a police report, and my wife, who teaches there, was called in the next day because she was an eyewitness, and we have other eyewitnesses,” continued Gonsalves.
“It was an unsafe condition and I couldn’t put my players and fans through that. If it’s a forfeit, it’s a forfeit but I’m 150 percent sure I’d do the same thing again. With that kind of fan behavior, I had to think about on the court and in the stands, but also in the bathrooms and if we won, leaving the school.”
In fairness to McNair, its principal, Jim Davis, has said in published reports that his school’s officials didn’t see any punches, they were not told of anyone being hit and that there were administrators and security personnel on site.
Regardless of the outcome, the 186-game league winning streak will remain intact in the Cal-Hi Sports state record list for that category. It won’t end on a forfeit (only on-the-court results count) but the good ‘ol asterisk would get to come out.
