Week 11 Top 25 Scoreboard

Among those getting goofy after Folsom wrapped up 10-0 regular season and league title were Calvin Gardner (5), Garrett Jackson (42), Troy Tillman (23) and Jake Browning (12).

Oops, looks like Rancho Cucamonga shouldn’t have been brought up to No. 7 in last week’s rankings. Archbishop Mitty, though, proves its worth as a top 10 team with a big win over Bellarmine while Fresno Edison gets upset in the Central Section.

1. De La Salle (Concord) 10-0
Defeated California (San Ramon) 55-0. The Spartans extended winning streak to 36 games by trampling team that still may get a top three seed in the CIF North Coast Section Division I playoffs.

2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 10-0
Defeated Servite (Anaheim) 42-21. This perfect regular season by the Braves came in the Trinity League.

3. Folsom 10-0
Defeated No. 16 Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 63-39. We wonder if the coaches liked this game or the 35-0 win over Oak Ridge better? No doubt that to beat DLS the Bulldogs will have to play offense like they did this week combined with the defense that got the shutout of the Trojans. RECAP SJS Pairings

4. Serra (Gardena) 10-0
Defeated St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs) 56-10. The Cavs led 35-0 after the first quarter and Adoree’ Jackson had a 46-yard pick six.

5. Mission Viejo 10-0
Defeated El Toro of Lake Forest 60-25. None of the Diablos’ regular season wins over California teams was that great, but their win over Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey seems to get stronger every week.

6. Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) 9-1
Defeated Wilson (Long Beach) 57-0. The Jackrabbits only gave up one score in all of their Moore League slate of games combined this season.

7. Rancho Cucamonga 9-1
Lost to Upland 24-6. Well, we did call this one in our Upset Alerts, but the Cougars laid an egg in an attempt to look like a legitimate contender to Corona Centennial and Vista Murrieta in the CIFSS Inland Division. We’ll bow our heads in resignation to other rankings that didn’t have RC this high.

8. Chaminade (West Hills) 8-2
Defeated St. Francis (La Canada) 56-35. The Eagles beat an 8-1 team and probably wrapped up a No. 2 seed in the CIFSS Western Division behind Gardena Serra.

9. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 8-2
Lost to Westlake (Westlake Village) 39-36. It was a stunner as the Lions fell on a blocked punt returned for a touchdown in the final seconds.

10. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 9-0
Defeated Bellarmine (San Jose) 34-7. This one was tied at 7-7 and the Monarchs elevated their game. They probably will be No. 8 in the state heading into next week’s game vs. Serra.

11. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 9-1
Defeated Jesuit (Carmichael) 45-42 on Saturday. This was almost an upset alert that came true, but Trojans won and seem to have a legit shot to get a rematch against Folsom in the D1 section final. SJS Pairings

12. Edison (Fresno) 9-1
Lost to Bullard (Fresno) 24-14. Along with Rancho Cucamonga going down, this result is huge for everyone in the CIF San Diego Section. It improves the odds of a San Diego team going to the D1 state bowl game and diminishes the odds for the Central Section.

13. Eastlake (Chula Vista) 9-1
Defeated Otay Ranch (Chula Vista) 35-7. Another solid win by the Titans, who will have to prove some naysayers wrong in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division. San Diego Pairings Reaction

14. Centennial (Corona) 8-2
Defeated Corona 74-0. Robert Webber went a perfect 4 for 4 passing for 81 yards and three touchdowns.

15. Bakersfield 8-2
Defeated Stockdale (Bakersfield) 37-6. While the Drillers kept rolling, Oaks Christian’s loss to Westlake may hurt them in the rankings due to having that head-to-head loss to the Lions.

16. Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 8-2
Lost to No. 3 Folsom 63-39. The way the Eagles scored they may not drop too far in the next rankings. And we’ll say it again: How many teams in the state from No. 6 or No. 7 and below could come any closer to any of the top four? RECAP SJS Pairings

17. Crenshaw (Los Angeles) 6-4
Defeated Rancho Dominguez Prep (Long Beach) 69-0. The Cougars have been winning games just like Long Beach Poly but unlike the Jackrabbits (who are CIFSS Pac-5) they have to keep playing teams from the L.A. City Section.

18. Alemany (Mission Hills) 8-2
Defeated Crespi (Encino) 34-7. This was a do-or-die win by the Warriors. We’ll see how the CIFSS Pac-5 pairings go, but with a head-to-head win over Corona Centennial they could jump back up in front of the Huskies in next week’s rankings.

19. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 7-3
Did not play. Will play next week in opening round of the CIFSS Pac-5 Division playoffs.

20. Mission Hills (San Marcos) 9-1
Defeated San Marcos 42-14. Many in San Diego are thinking it will be a Mission Hills-Oceanside rematch in the first Open Division final. San Diego Pairings Reactions

21. Del Oro (Loomis) 8-2
Defeated No. 23 Rocklin 14-13. Yet another close win by the Golden Eagles, who won earlier in OT over Grant and by two over Granite Bay. SJS Pairings

22. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 8-2
Defeated No. 24 Orange Lutheran (Orange) 15-0. With this win, the Monarchs finished in second-place in the Trinity League and should get a favorable draw in the CIFSS Pac-5 Division.

23. Rocklin 7-3
Lost to No. 21 Del Oro (Loomis) 14-13. It could be a tough decision whether the Thunder stay or have to drop out of next week’s rankings. SJS Pairings

24. Orange Lutheran (Orange) 7-3
Lost to No. 22 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 15-0. The Lancers were coming off of a big win over Santa Margarita, but did nothing against the Monarchs.

25. Serra (San Mateo) 7-2
Defeated Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco) 56-6 on Saturday. Remember, still another week to go in the regular season in the CCS and Serra will play Archbishop Mitty.

Teams On The Bubble:

Bellarmine (San Jose) 6-3
Lost to No. 10 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 34-7.

California (San Ramon) 8-2
Lost to No. 1 De La Salle (Concord) 55-0.

Casa Grande (Petaluma) 10-0
Defeated Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 40-28. RECAP

Clayton Valley (Concord) 9-1
Defeated Northgate (Walnut Creek) 56-28.

Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 10-0
Defeated Northwood (Irvine) 35-21.

Crespi (Encino) 4-6
Lost to No. 18 Alemany (Mission Hills) 34-7.

Elk Grove 9-1
Defeated Davis 35-7. SJS Pairings

Granite Bay 7-3
Defeated Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 49-7. SJS Pairings

Grant (Sacramento) 7-3
Defeated Laguna Creek (Elk Grove) 62-7. SJS Pairings

Hart (Newhall) 8-2
Lost to Canyon (Canyon Country) 45-38.

Helix (La Mesa) 8-2
Defeated Steele Canyon (Spring Valley) 14-13.

James Logan (Union City) 8-2
Defeated Mission San Jose (Fremont) 71-0.

Jesuit (Carmichael) 7-3
LOST to No. 11 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 45-42 on Saturday. SJS Pairings

JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 7-3
Defeated Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) 26-7.

La Habra 9-1
Defeated Buena Park 21-14.

Luther Burbank (Sacramento) 8-2
Defeated Kennedy (Sacramento) 63-6. SJS Pairings

Madison (San Diego) 9-1
Defeated Point Loma (San Diego) 28-7.

Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 10-0
Defeated San Marin (Novato) 49-14 on Saturday. Wildcats led 35-0 at the half.

Oceanside 8-2
Defeated El Camino (Oceanside) 37-13. San Diego Pairings Reactions

Pittsburg 8-2
Defeated Antioch 19-0.

Defeated No. 9 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 39-36.

It’s playoff time, it’ll be difficult for O’side in the SDS open division because six of the eight teams (including O’side) are good teams. Any of those six would represent SD proudly in a D1 south regional bowl if selected. Good luck PIRATES!!

Not sure how Crenshaw with all their losses can maintain itself with that ranking ? Oceanside’s defense is superb; however, qb play is going to haunt them against the many good teams in SD Open. This should have been addressed early in season, and unfortunetly this will rear its head again ? Can’t blame kids, but coaching.

The last time pirates had a young QB who struggled here n there

I question what I want. I use to play on Pirates, and to compare him to Tofi is not a good measuring stick. Coaches shunning outsider qbs due to not going through Pirate system. I see no other logic ?

Quarterback back Josh Harris that transferred from Helix, is better then #2. #2 throws an interception every game! It’s playoff time now, if he throws any more, Carroll needs to take him out

I completely disagree with you… clearly the Oceanside staff does as well… and so does the Helix staff… Honestly, what has #8 shown to demonstrate that he is better than #2 in Oceanside’s system? Using last year’s Helix stats means practically nothing…

Well if you watched the Mission Hills game, you could see that 6 turnovers for a quarterback is the worst you can have. Now is playoffs, you got Eastlake that has a powerhouse elite them this year. I’m always a pirate fan! All I’m saying is 2 or more interceptions then you bench # 2

Tofi was a sophomore with a strong arm and confidence which I see in the sophomore qb they have this year. Oceanside’s defense is the key to win the SD Open Bowl, but the offense can’t give other team free points. I hate to say it, but I can see them losing it this year with interceptions and sluggish offense.

My point is not comparing the two qb’s. it’s the situation.
Oside running game led them when #6 was at the helm 2010 CIF.
The Pirates consistently have good defenses. Your right about turnovers
I strongly agree but you don’t change a QB just for the sake of it thinking the transfer all of a sudden is Tom Brady. Coach is loyal and you will see it payoff not only this season but next year as well.
      GO PIRATES!! CLASS OF 95′

#2 works hard, knows playbook, but has a weak arm and under throws and does not hit recievers in stride, nor looks to the left. His stats are enhanced by the YAC of the great skill players. He looks like he is throwing a javelin, and cbs can close gap. He gets nervous and falls apart, and due to this, you see Oceanside throwing less and handing off more in the traditional sense. The offense has metamorphis due to terrible qb play. We are now old school ‘pound the ball.” How about playing OCEANSIDE OFFENSE and put the better QB in ?

Not true. Former Helix Qb still does not know offense and neither does the AZ transfer. This offense is complex and needs at least a full semester at minimum to be comfortable with all the audibles and reads. Both Transfers came in too late!

You must be #2 dad, for he is not the best Qb on the squad. He may be worst that Steve Carrol ? They will have to look elsewhere to win i.e defense, big plays, or the YAC by their great skill players.

    • Mark Tennis

I would vote for Clayton Valley. Defending champ. Only loss to DLS. Just got impressive win over Northgate. Casa Grande also just got great win and has played a stronger schedule. I just don’t think it’s so much of an edge on schedule that it trumps Clayton Valley’s case. Close call, though, and once we see the pairings it may not make a difference.

Based on the way rankings are done on this site, it’s time to start dropping Chaminade due to Hart’s consecutive losses and oaks Christians recent loss… There is little doubt that Chaminade is NOT a top 10 team in the state….

    • Mark Tennis
      Posted November 10, 2013 at 12:21 am | Permalink

Yes, but Chaminade also has wins over Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, Venice, Valencia and just beat an 8-1 La Canada St. Francis. Those other results may prevent Chaminade from moving up or another team (like Mitty) hopping them. There also would be doubt about any team in next week’s rankings in the top 10 after Long Beach Poly at No. 6.

I hear you but I’m not so sure I would include Venice in the list, they haven’t beaten anybody that is any good… Just as a comparison Chaminade’s opponents combined record is 69-31 while Oceanside’s is 68-32… Chaminade is in your top 10 while Oceanside isn’t even in the top 25… They also have a common opponent in Serra and it is pretty clear who looked better against them…. I know it comes down to matchups but still… Thanks for the response though

If Oside runs table they will have knocked off Eastlake and Mission Hills who are top 15 teams. That would be a solid case for a Div 1 regional game versus VM/CC title game (granted its those two teams at the end).

If that happens as you describe, then I don’t think the Central Section has a chance, neither does L.A. City or San Diego Division I. The screwy thing is what happens if Mission Hills wins SD Open and San Pasqual wins SD Division I. Does Mission Hills still get higher preference for a bowl game over San Pasqual as the Open winner or does the head-to-head win by SP take higher priority? My gut says you’d go with the open winner in that situation.

If it’s either Clayton Valley or Casa Grande that win NCS D2 title, I think that team is one of the two teams for the NorCal bowl game for sure. The battle then would be between potentially unbeaten Enterprise vs. SJS D3 champion. We’ve said many times that may be a tough call.

Once again I agree with Mark. There is no doubt that Casa at 14-0 or Clayton Valley at 13-1 with their only loss being a good game against Dls at Dls could be past up by any other team.

I used to question the rankings on this site, but after five years of comprehending why they rank teams the way they do, its understandable. My Oceanside Pirates are not ranked for good reason and I agree with it. O’side is in the same bracket as Eastlake, and the Titans are a great team, in my opinion. Oceanside is a great team as well, but this year’s open division will prove who the best in SD really is.

At home this weekend are they top ten team without muffin drama?
Ok that’s college though. I love watching high school football it’s the best.
Oside all the way in my veins. Open division in my mind should have started
A long time ago. Look Eastlake is consistent every year as well as helix, cathedral is d1
But they are consistent as well. Mission hills are like la costa canyon and Vista
They may have a 2 year run then a fall off for awhile. Now oceanside
Always in it. Win Cif. Maybe play Corona or VM. Go from there.

Eastlake is a goord program; consequently, Oside qb play may give them the game. It is terrible due to the fact, that the talent level on Oside is supreme, but MAY fall victim to terrible coaching perception. This is the first year Oceanside has had 2 better Qbs on the bench ? I agree, but Coach Carroll is running the ball too much. Now don’t get me wrong Thai is a phenomenal player, but coaches & players are going to watch film & see that they give him the ball way to much. They need to switch it like they did before when they had two quarterbacks with Steve Carroll & Jeff’s Small. Use that spread offense & pass it to Whittaker, Holder, Dodds, Arizola. All of the bashing of Oceanside’s qb is unfounded and ridiculous… Is he a big time recruit as a qb? no… but he is CLEARLY better than the other two options… go back to the Serra game when #2 goes out with cramps… the soph looked like a deer in the headlights… Any time qb #8 comes into the game he fumbles the ball and the timing is completely off… #2 gives Oceanside the best chance to win plain and simple… Time to stop bashing the program you claim to support.. and no offense but I’m guessing the coaching staff at Oceanside (who sees all three qbs daily in practice) is the most informed and the most able to make the decision at qb… Time to get over yourself and move onto supporting the Pirates…

I’m sure the whole coaching staff agrees that #2 is by far their best option and the other two never grasped the whole offense. Besides rumor has it that the soph qb is transferring to a rival school. Furthermore, their freshman qb has a lot of potential and is already 6-3’ish and has a very strong arm. There will be competition next year, but this year #2 has it in him to get it done.
