The state’s all-time list for those football players who have scored 100 or more touchdowns in their prep careers has grown by three in the last three weeks.

Leading the trio, but not by much, is Mendota’s Edgar Segura. He scored six TDs last week in a 48-18 triumph over Tranquillity. That put his career total at 119 TDs since 2011 and according to CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett gives him a section record. Segura broke the previous record of 118 set in 2000 by Dominique Dorsey of Tulare and then tied the next year by Kenny James of Dos Palos.

Dorsey’s total at the time also was the state record, but it only lasted one year. Ventura St. Bonaventure’s Lorenzo Booker came along and destroyed it, putting the record total at 137.

Booker’s state record still stands. Segura is on a team that won the Central Section Division VI title last year, but would probably need at least four more games to break Booker’s record. The problem is that Mendota had two byes in its playoff run last year and if that happens again Segura would only probably have three games left.

Royce Freeman of Imperial is right on the heels of Segura. He broke the CIF San Diego Section career TD record last week with five TDs in Imperial’s 45-28 victory over Central of El Centro. The big-time recruit enters this week with 114 career TDs. Imperial also is 9-0 and will make the section playoffs. If the Tigers get to a 14th game, which is a possibility, Freeman probably would pass Segura on the all-time state list and may get to Booker’s total as well.

The third player to join the 100 TD club is Andrew Brown of Ripon Christian. He had just three TDs last week in RC’s 62-7 win over Gustine. But he had already hit 100 and already had broken the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section record of 107 set in 2007 by Louis Bland from Central Catholic of Modesto and enters a big game this week against LeGrand with 112. If he’s held down in that game, Brown would then need a deep playoff run to likely match the career totals that Segura and Freeman will end with.
