Two numbers stick out in this week’s Cal-Hi Sports State Top 20 girls volleyball rankings.
First, it’s the zero that is no longer attached to the win-loss record of No. 1 Torrey Pines of San Diego; and second it’s the zeroes that are still attached to the win-loss records of both No. 9 Granite Bay and No. 15 Santiago of Corona.
Torrey Pines lost last Saturday to Mater Dei of Santa Ana in the championship match of the ASCICS California Challenge. The Monarchs knocked off the host school 27-29, 25-21, 15-7 after getting past Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the semifinals. They were led by tourney MVP Frankie Shebby along with all-tourney picks Payton Chang and Sami Krakower.
Torrey Pines didn’t drop in this week’s rankings since it was the Falcons’ first loss. They are still ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 4 in the Student Sports FAB 50 national poll because they are still in front of three teams they placed higher than at the Las Vegas Durango Fall Classic in September – including state No. 2 Archbishop Mitty. For Torrey Pines to fall behind Mitty (which has two losses), it usually requires a second loss in the Cal-Hi Sports criteria-based rankings.
The win also jumped Mater Dei from No. 15 to No. 4 in this week’s state rankings. The Monarchs, however, are still trying to overcome four losses and are still behind state No. 3 Los Alamitos in both the CIF Southern Section and Orange County rankings. The Griffins also had a good weekend as they topped previous state No. 4 Lakewood in three straight games at the Steve Lewis Volleyfest in Long Beach.
For Granite Bay, its unbeaten record jumped to 22-0 after it defeated all comers at the NorCal Classic tournament held in Folsom.
To say we’ll find out more about the Grizzlies this weekend at the Stockton Classic is an understatement. Also in the field in that event are top Bay Area teams such as No. 2 Archbishop Mitty, No. 16 Redwood of Larkspur and No. 17 Menlo School of Atherton and Bay Area Top 10 Campolindo of Moraga. No. 20 St. Mary’s of Stockton, along with Gregori of Modesto (29-2) are others to watch from the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.
For Corona Santiago, it took top honors at the Ayala tourney in Chino Hills and pushed its perfect record to 27-0. Unlike Granite Bay, however, the Sharks do not seem to be in a tournament like the Stockton Classic for the rest of the season and they will be competing in the CIFSS Division II-AA playoffs, which isn’t quite like the super-loaded Division I-AA.
Note: This week’s rankings do not include any results from Tuesday, Oct. 15; such as Valley Christian of San Jose at Mitty.

[…] Three of the top five teams took losses last week with some being among themselves. After a win over Redwood, up-and-down Presentation, a team with some good wins but some stinker losses, made a case for coming back in as the lone newcomer. However, while the Panthers didn’t get the nod, the CIF Central Coast Section still picked up a spot with Palo Alto getting the spot vacated by Maria Carrillo. We provide these rankings as part of a promotion with the Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area TV show. Note: This week’s rankings do not include Tuesday match played this week between Archbishop Mitty and Valley Christian. Also, for this week’s new State Top 20 in girls volleyball, CLICK HERE. […]
