It’s been a tough year at Nevada Union of Grass Valley, normally a powerhouse program in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section but struggling against a difficult schedule this season.
Entering Friday, the Miners had already been nearly blanked in losses to Grant of Sacramento (46-6) and Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove (62-7) but had still improved their ongoing state record of scoring at least once in a game to 344. The last time they were shut out was in 1984.
This week’s opponent, Elk Grove, is ranked even higher than Grant or Pleasant Grove and ended Nevada Union’s scoring streak. The Thundering Herd won 43-0 so the state record streak is over.
A 344-game scoring streak is truly amazing, but more bad news for NU is that its record could be broken by the end of this season. According to our own Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book, Los Alamitos is next on the list in that category and after winning on Friday 42-6 have scoring in 339 consecutive games since 1987. The Griffins are 4-0 and if they score in their remaining regular season games they would get to 345 and would surpass Nevada Union’s state record.
If you’re wondering where De La Salle fits into this, the Spartans had scored in 308 straight games from 1979 to 2005 when they were blanked by Clovis West of Fresno. Three long streaks on the all-time state list also ended just last season — St. Bonaventure of Ventura at 253, Long Beach Poly and 225 and San Pedro at 222.

Mark, thanks for the info. I was a captain on the last team that got blanked. Nov. 2, 1984 against Christian Brothers, if I remember correctly.
I was wrong. It was 1983 against Grant in a mud game. I think we scored 3 against CB in 84.
I see that Chris Nixon, the head coach at Elk Grove, was on the Nevada Union team that last got shut out in 1983.
The record book says 1984-2013 because the scoring streak began in first game of 1984.
He was a pretty good receiver.
In addition, that was Marshall Nixon’s (his dad) last game as a head coach.
