It’s just getting too difficult to determine some state records with certainty until they are researched properly.
In the category of most yards by two teams in one football game, for example, the official total of 1,380 in the recent shootout between Corona Centennial and St. Bonaventure of Ventura wasn’t arrived at until St. Bonaventure’s total of 494 was turned in by the Ventura County Star. We initially reported 507, but that was based on our quick calculations at the game. Traditionally, it’s the total from the local newspaper or school that we accept.
Further research into other games since the 2009 season began (the last printed edition of the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book was earlier that year) also has revealed two other totals even higher. In 2009, Pitman of Turlock defeated Downey of Modesto 77-35 with Pitman getting 821 yards and Downey getting 567 for a combo total of 1,420. Then in a game last year, a total for Valhalla of El Cajon in its 77-48 loss to El Toro was finally obtained. It was already reported that El Toro had 881 yards in that game. It turns out that Valhalla had 507 for a combo total of 1,388 (which is eight yards higher than Corona Centennial vs. St. Bonaventure).
When two spread offense teams collide, these types of games are becoming far more common. Just last week, Folsom and San Ramon Valley of Danville went for 1,264 yards in Folsom’s 67-36 win. There also were 12 TD passes in that game, which is tied for third all-time in the state. Folsom and Woodcreek of Roseville combined for 14 TD passes last year to set that record.
The good news is that all of the two-team combo records for one game are now updated and are now in the pipeline to be posted soon on our site.
