RELATED: Week 4 State Top 25 Scoreboard
Del Oro was excited to head to Concord to take on state No. 1 De La Salle, but that excitement on the way to Concord turned into a long ride home as the Spartans rushed for over 400 yards and picked up the 41-3 victory.
Setting the stage for what was to come, the Spartans started the game from their own 20-yard line and quickly ran down the field. John Velasco broke away on a 52-yard run down to the 1-yard line and a play later punched it in for six points.
Del Oro responded with what turned out to be its best drive of the game. The Golden Eagles went 14 plays and used nearly six minutes of the clock before Mason Humes kicked a 31-yard field goal.
Quickly answering right back, the Spartans took just 1:37 to go 80 yards for another score as Antoine Custer ran it in from 25 yards out.
Velasco scoreed his second touchdown of the night on a 20-yard run to open up the second quarter. A few minutes later, QB Chris Williams scored on a 15-yard run as the Spartans extended their lead to 28-3 at halftime on their way to the running clock victory.
In the first half, Velasco and Custer each rushed for at least 100 yards while three of the four scoring drives took 1:37 or less. Seeing limited action in the second half, Velasco finished with 173 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries while Custer finished with 103 yards and a score on 10 carries.
Dylan Kainrath rushed for 71 yards on 14 carries for the Golden Eagles and had several nice runs before getting injured and seeing minimal action in the second half.
Up next for the Spartans will be a home game against San Ramon Valley of Danville while the Golden Eagles will return home and face Grant of Sacramento.
