Watson, Centennial Sensational In Win

Whether you are a veteran prep writer trying to keep track of the dizzying pace or a high school defender trying to slow it down, the offense of nationally ranked Centennial of Corona creates a lot of frustration.

With senior running back Tre Watson churning out a school record 468 yards rushing on 37 carries and scoring seven touchdowns, the Huskies overwhelmed St. Bonaventure of Ventura 69-55 in the final game on Saturday night of the UT San Diego Honor Bowl at Oceanside High’s Simcox Field.

Both teams came into the game highly ranked. Centennial was No. 2 in the overall state rankings and No. 7 in the Student Sports FAB 50 national rankings. St. Bonaventure was No. 13 in the state and also was in the West Region Top 20.

Watson didn’t break the previous school record of 416 yards set in 2005 by Ryan Bass because head coach Matt Logan was padding his stats, either. Watson had to do what he did because the St. Bonaventure offense was almost as potent as Centennial’s and kept scoring as well.

After junior Marcus Chambers pulled the Seraphs to within 62-48 with 5:14 left, Watson scored his final touchdown on a 24-yard run.

St. Bonaventure still wasn’t done scoring, though. The Seraphs went 56 yards in two plays after Watson’s touchdown with Ricky Town firing a 35-yard TD pass to Chambers.

With 3:44 left and the score now 69-55, Centennial recovered the onside kick attempt. The Huskies still couldn’t just fall on the ball so Watson got several more carries and iced the game with runs of 9, 2, 11 and 19 yards.

“A couple of times, we tried it (pulling me out), but we had a fumble and they were still within distance to come back, so I had to stay in,” Watson said. “I am more ecstatic than tired, but I now tomorrow I will be sore.”

While Watson has out-shined quarterback Robert Webber in Centennial’s first two games, Webber hasn’t been just handing off to him. The senior field general of the Huskies’ three-ring circus connected on 21 of 30 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 77 yards.

It’s hard to know exact yardage totals in this type of game off hand because it’s easy to for the media to have varying totals based on different spots of the ball, especially when Centennial is on offense. For St. Bonaventure, quick calculations showed Chambers with a breakout game (25 carries, 235 yards, three TDs) plus Town going 19 of 29 for 271 yards.

“They got within two scores and we were actually trying to slow it down, but we’d go down and score,” Centennial coach Matt Logan said. “Credit to them for battling, they could have easily given up.”

Centennial’s total offense for the game was commonly agreed upon by reporters in the press box at 870 yards. That’s not a state record (according to our own Cal-Hi Sports record book) but it is a school record and it looks like it’s a CIF Southern Section record.

Adding in St. Bonaventure’s unofficial total of 507 yards, the two teams had a combined total of 1,377. It looks like that total will be a new two-team state record, but more research is going to be needed to sort through everything.
