FB: Celis Leads Marin Catholic Win

In the annual battle between CIFNCS and CIFCCS Catholic school rivals with the same mascot, it was the Wildcats from north of the Golden Gate Bridge that emerged victorious after spotting the hosts a 10-0 first quarter lead and then scoring 24 unanswered points to take a 24-10 halftime lead.

Marin Catholic (2-0) was led by Andrew Celis. The Nevada-bound senior caught a 17-yard touchdown pass, threw a 24-yard halfback option pass, kicked a 46-yard field goal, and returned from cramps after missing most of the second half to recover an onside kick that sealed the victory.

“I just like to go out there and do what I can do, and that’s not taking on 280-pound lineman,” said Celis, who had a TD reception, a 50-yard punt return for a score, and a 42-yard field goal in last week’s win over Orinda Miramonte.

Sophomore running back Darius Peterson added two TDs on runs of three and 35 yards, and Oregon-bound quarterback Morgan Mahalak threw for 136 yards and one touchdown, and also ran for 58 yards.

St. Ignatius (0-1) got 106 yards rushing and one touchdown from Elijah Dale, but it came on a 31 carries against a stout Marin Catholic defense.

Junior quarterback Ryan Hagfeldt, making his first varsity start for St. Ignatius, passed for 156 yards and one TD, but he was only 15 of 36 and got sacked three times.

The series, dating back to 1988, but played every year since 1997, is now tied at 9-9-1.
