Saturday night’s ESPNU-televised matchup between Central of Fresno and Valor Christian of Highlands Ranch, Colo., was called after a long weather delay in the third quarter and with Valor Christian leading 31-7.
Central ventured to the Denver area as the No. 1 team in the Fresno Bee’s preseason rankings and was No. 15 in the Cal-Hi Sports preseason state rankings. Worse than the loss, however, was that two top Grizzly players suffered injuries. According to Andy Boogaard of the Fresno Bee, running back Nick Wilson didn’t suit up in the second half due a shoulder injury and USC-bound tackle Sharif Williams left with a lower leg injury.
The host school, which won last year’s Class 5A state title in Colorado, was led by Stanford-bound Christian McCaffrey with three touchdowns. Midway through the third quarter, lightning strikes were close enough to require the teams to be taken off the field. The lightning strikes continued and after a long delay it was decided to call the game a final score.
Valor Christian head coach and athletic director Rod Sherman was the athletic director at Lutheran of Orange before he left to help build the program at Valor. He was the A.D. for the Lancers when they won the first CIF Division II state bowl game in 2006.
