This Friday’s matchups involving top state-ranked football teams will be quite rare since just about everyone is beginning either on the weekend of Aug. 30-31 or Sept. 6-7.
The most significant takes place in Colorado where Central of Fresno, which is the preseason pick by many in the CIF Central Section due to its five to six major college prospects, is taking on defending Class 5A Colorado state champ Valor Christian of Highlands Ranch. The game is Saturday and it will be on ESPN2.
Although the Grizzlies are from Fresno, many in my Stockton neighborhood will be pulling for Valor Christian. This is because Valor Christian athletic director and football coach Rod Sherman is the son of Doug Sherman, who lives across the street from me and is a captain of our neighborhood watch group.
Saturday’s game will feature Nick Wilson of Central, one of the top running backs in the state, and Valor Christian’s Christian McCaffrey, committed to Stanford and one of the top all-around players in the nation.
