Baseball

A.J. Balta (Valencia)
Returning back to the starting lineup in a big way earlier this week, he went 3 for 3 with a grand slam home run as the Vikings defeated Westlake of Westlake Village 11-2 in a CIF Southern Section Division I wild-card playoff game.

Jesse Basilio (Stagg, Stockton)
In a 8-1 triumph against West of Tracy, Jesse collected four hits, scored three times and had two RBIs. His efforts helped the Delta Kings qualify for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for the first time in more than 30 years.

Jake Bauers (Marina, Huntington Beach)
Earning honors as the OCVarsity baseball athlete of the week, this Hawaii-bound senior had two doubles and a home run to lead Marina past state No. 3 Fountain Valley in a pair of wins. Bauers also drove in four runs and scored five times in the two games.

Brett Berghammer (Half Moon Bay)
Extending his hitting streak to four games, Bergie hammered his way to a perfect 4 for 4 performance and drove in two runs as the Cougars defeated Hillsdale of San Mateo by a football-like final score of 14-7. Berghammer, a junior, raised his season average to .524

Brad Degnan (Woodside)
It wasn’t quite the three home runs performance for one inning from earlier this season, but Degnan did double three times as the Wildcats lost to El Camino of South San Francisco 12-2.

Jacob Gatewood (Clovis)
One of the reasons Clovis has been one of the top teams in the CIF Central Section all season has been Gatewood’s play at shortstop, one the mound and at the plate. The 6-foot-5 junior has committed to USC.

Trevor Hall (Cypress)
With the Empire League championship on the line, this junior right-handed pitcher had a career-high 10 strikeouts and picked up his 9th win of the season as the Centurions defeated Valencia of Placentia 5-2 to win the title.

Jesse Hanckel (Village Christian, Sun Valley)
With three big hits, Hanckel led the Crusaders in their 16-4 win over Notre Dame of Riverside in the CIFSS Division V wild-card playoffs. He had a double and a homer among the hits and finished with five RBIs.

Chris Kohler (Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga)
Most no-hitters are memorable but this one will be a little more memorable for this senior as he pitched his first career no-hitter in a 9-0 win over Glendora last week. The win clinched the Baseline League championship for the Grizzlies. Kohler, an Area Code Games participant last summer, had eight strikeouts and was one walk away from perfection.

Alex Martinez (Logan, Union City)
Showing he can do it all, he went 3 for 3 with a double in a 3-1 win over Newark Memorial of Newark and then took the mound against Washington of Fremont and allowed just one hit while striking out a season-high 12 in a 5-0 win for the Colts.

Chris Mathewson (Kaiser, Fontana)
With more hits at the plate than he allowed on the mound, Mathewson moved to 8-0 on the season with a one-hitter and also went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in during a 11-0 win over Fontana in Sunkist League play.

Kyle Molnar (Aliso Niguel, Aliso Viejo)
Despite being just a sophomore, Molnar has played more like a senior this season. He not only drove in the game-winning run in a 3-0 win over San Clemente but he racked up his seventh win of the season on the mound as he pitched the complete game shutout. On the season, he also was batting .317.

Frank Padulo (Los Alamitos)
With a CIFSS Division I playoff spot on the line, he went 5 for 5 with two doubles as the Griffins defeated Newport Harbor of Newport Beach 11-6.

Kenny Rosenberg (Tamalpais, Mill Valley)
Putting together back-to-back eight inning performances, he first struck out 11 and allowed just an unearned run during a 2-1 win over Novato. Next, in a game played last week, Rosenberg struck out 12 and allowed just three hits before being removed and getting a no decision in a game the Red Tailed Hawks eventually won 1-0 over Marin Catholic of Kentfield in nine innings.

Sean Sparling (La Habra)
Making sure his senior season ends as good as possible, he pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out seven in a 1-0 win over Sonora of La Habra. Sparling has pitched five straight shutouts while striking out a total of 38 batters in those five wins. On the year, he is 7-3 with a 0.95 ERA.

Sam Stavang (Bonita, La Verne)
A key part of why the Bearcats are now ranked inside the top 10 overall in the state is this senior pitcher. He pitched his second no-hitter of the season last week during a 1-0 win over Diamond Bar.

Michael Strem (St. Francis, Mountain View)
Getting the start in the Lancers’ CCS Division I playoff opener on Wednesday, Strem made the most of his 66 pitches as he tossed the first perfect game in school history and struck out eight in a 2-0 win over Monta Vista of Cupertino.

Jordan Vasquez (Monache, Porterville)
He tied a school record with five hits and also knocked in five runs in a 17-3 win over Porterville in a East Yosemite League game.

Softball

Sabrina Acosta & Ali Razo (Arleta)
Getting the call to be in the circle in the Mustangs’ CIF L.A. City Section Division II playoff opener, Sabrina didn’t allow a hit while striking out seven in their 16-0 win over Dorsey. Ali led the offensive attack as she went 4 for 5 with two triples and seven runs batted in.

Erin Bettis (Harbor Teacher Prep, Wilmington)
Allowing just two hits while striking out 10, she also went 4 for 5 with a double, triple and three runs batted in for her team in a 24-0 romp past Discovery Prep.

Tera Blanco (Marina, Huntington Beach)
The former State Freshman of the Year not only dominated in the circle with 10 strikeouts but she also had two hits, including a home run, as the Vikings defeated Fountain Valley 3-0 to clinch the Sunset League championship.

Baylee Boren (Stockdale, Bakersfield)
She went 4-for-5 at the plate, which included a home run, a triple and a whopping nine RBIs (which established a new school record) in a 20-2 win over Bakersfield.

Mia Camuso (Shasta, Redding)
Just a freshman, Camuso is already in the state record book for collecting 17 doubles during the season for the Wolves. In games last week, she went 4-for-4 with one double vs. Enterprise of Redding (5-3 loss) and then 2-for-3 with two doubles in a 6-3 win over the Hornets.

Melissa Castaneda (Laton)
The Laton flame-thrower pitched her third no-hitter of the season in a five-inning 22-0 win over Kings Christian.  She also was 3-for-5 at the plate and had five stolen bases.  Teammate Sydnee Cisneros had three hits, all that were doubles, and Tori Castaneda had five RBIs.

Laura Contreras (Bullard, Fresno)
Bullard’s latest star was perfect at the plate with four hits in four at-bats, which included a grand slam and a career high six RBIs, in a 7-1 win over Madera.

Kristen Cullen (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village)
Making sure the Lions’ postseason wouldn’t be one and done in a CIF Southern Section D2 wild card game, she had 13 strikeouts during a no-hit performance in a 11-0 win over Norwalk.

Rebecca Faulkner (Carlmont, Belmont)
California’s all-time winningest coach Jim Liggett always has a dandy in the circle and the past two seasons it’s been this UC Riverside-committed left-hander. Last week, in a 4-2 win over a very solid Half Moon Bay, Faulkner tossed one-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Two days later she improved to 20-2 with a 0.71 ERA on the three-hitter against San Bruno Capuchino, in a 10-0 victory in which she also hit her seventh home run this season.

Brie Gerhardt (Petaluma)
One of seven players on the 22-1 Trojans to have at least 10 RBI and 10 runs scored, this sophomore leads the team in both categories with, with 19 and 30 respectively, plus hits with 39, and she’s second on the team with a .513 average. Last week, in a big 12-2 win over league rival Analy of Sebastopol, she hit her first two home runs of the season in the victory.

Brianna Grayson (Port of Los Angeles, San Pedro)
They might be the Polar Bears but their bats have been red hot as of late. Grayson, a senior, led the way during the team’s 17-1 win over Bright Star of Los Angeles as she homered and drove in five runs.

Kira Griswold (Beckman, Irvine)
Committed to Colgate, this junior pitcher hurled her fifth no-hitter of the season last week and struck out eight in a 7-0 win over University of Irvine.

Fara Ketesleger & Dani Velez (Ayala, Chino Hills)
Both players each hit three doubles for the Bulldogs during their 13-0 win over La Mirada in the CIFSS Division II wild-card round.

Mikayla Martin (Scripps Ranch, San Diego)
The sophomore standout led the Falcons to a pair of wins last week, which also was enough to give them the Eastern League championship. Martin first went 4-for-4 with five RBIs, including two doubles and a triple, in a 15-3 win over Christian of El Cajon. In the next game, she went 2-for-3 with a run scored in a 12-1 romp past Morse of San Diego. In addition to hitting, Martin picked up the pitching wins in both games with eight combined innings in which she didn’t allow an earned run.

Katiyana Mauga (Mira Mesa, San Diego)
One of the top hitters in the state who is headed to Arizona, Mauga wrapped up her prep career with 41 homers to tie the San Diego Section record held by Oceanside’s Trina Harrison. The UTSanDiego.com web site also reported that Mauga’s final career totals are 176 for RBIs, 189 for hits and 154 for runs. None of those career totals are state records, but all four make the state record book.

Aniesa Maulupe (Carson)
She might not be the Colts’ biggest slugger, but she sure was in their 14-1 win over Marshall. Maulupe homered twice and drove in four runs. Brianna Tautalafua also hit her 15th home run of the season in the win.

Tara McIntyre (Wheatland)
The junior shortstop has put her name into the state record book in three seasonal categories but her main goal heading into the final week of the season is for her team to win the CIF Northern Section Division IV title. She went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and had a double in last week’s 8-0 win over Yreka. Combined with totals from another win against Winters, McIntyre had 68 hits, 60 runs and 17 doubles for the season. She also had upped her batting average to .562.

Rachael Metzger (Garces, Bakersfield)
The senior leader on a team loaded with underclassmen, Metzger set two new school records — homers in a game with three and homers in a season with 12 — during a 14-3 triumph against Tehachapi. Jillian Froehlich also had was outstanding at the plate with two home runs and five RBIs.

Heather Morales (Indio)
She hit a home run in the sixth inning of her final game, but Indio lost 5-2 in a CIF Southern Section wild-card playoff to West Valley of Hemet. Morales hit 20 home runs in her junior season. Her career total is still unreported. She will play next at the University of Hawaii.

Katie Moss & Noa Yakir (Homestead, Cupertino)
Moss, a St. Mary’s-bound senior pitcher, tossed a six-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 CCS Division I opening round 10-0 victory over San Jose Independence. Yakir, a sophomore third-sacker, hit her CCS-leading 11th home run.

Kylee Perez (Alhambra, Martinez)
After going 0-for-3 in a 2-1 loss to Petaluma two weeks ago, the UCLA-committed slugger took it out on the Bulldogs’ two opponents last week, hitting her sixth home run in a blowout of Dublin, and the numbers seven and eight in an 11-1 win over Moraga Campolindo. Besides the eight round-trippers, the Alhambra shortstop is batting .589 with 40 RBIs, 38 runs scored, and a 1.143 slugging percentage. She’s also only committed one error in the field this season.

Areana Ramos & Morgan Santana (Ontario Christian, Ontario)
Ramos was solid in the circle as she had 10 strikeouts while hitting a home run of her own during a 12-1 win over Calvary Murrieta. Santana went a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and stole three bases for the Knights.

Delynn Rippy (El Camino, Oceanside)
For yet another season, Rippy and been rippin’ apart the ball for the Wildcats. The senior went 3-for-4 with two runs and two steals in a 4-3 loss last week to Fallbrook and then had a triple, homer and two RBIs in a 8-1 win against La Costa Canyon. Rippy began this week batting .464 for the season and already has set school records for career hits, career runs and career batting average.

Traci Shaw (Castro Valley)
The Trojans’ freshman had three hits, including a home run and seven RBIs, in an 18-8 pounding of league rival San Lorenzo Arroyo.

Haley Snyder (Christian Brothers, Sacramento)
Finishing up Capital Valley Conference play in style, she not only didn’t allow a hit but she struck out 16 as the Falcons defeated Bella Vista of Fair Oaks 2-0.

Jocelyn Thomas (Rialto)
With Thomas hitting a grand slam home run and driving in six runs, the Knights won the first San Andreas League title in school history with a 10-0 five-inning win over San Gorgonio of San Bernardino.

Mariah Vang (Roosevelt, Fresno)
She was perfect at the plate, going 5 for 5 to set a school record, as the Rough Riders topped Fresno 7-5 in a North Yosemite League game. Teammate Jackie Frausto hit her 11th home run of the season in the same game to break another school record.

Kristin Worley (Savanna, Anaheim)
Worley’s Rebels finished Orange League play undefeated for the second straight season after she went 2 for 2 with a triple and five runs batted in during an 18-0 win over Santa Ana Valley. It was also Savanna’s 10th straight league title.
