We move on in the release of the 41st annual Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Teams and these next teams are for those from medium & small schools. It’s more confusing as ever as which is large, medium & small thanks to competitive equity based playoffs but we have been doing these teams for a long time. Both the small schools and medium schools have a first and second team all-state and remember these are position specific. The final, overall all-state teams are still to come.

Two of the strongest small school softball teams in the state over the last 10 years were the ones this season at Sutter of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section and Ganesha of Pomona in the CIF Southern Section. Both were unbeaten and posted monster statistics on offense. Sutter added a CIF NorCal D3 regional title to its section title and ended No. 1 in the final D4 state rankings. Ganesha, which opted out of the regional playoffs, was right behind at No. 2.
This year’s Cal-Hi Sports small school all-state teams reflected those two teams doing so well. Sutter ended with three players on first team and one on second. Ganesha had two on first team and one on second.
Small Schools State Player of the Year Olivia Bauer (Boise State) led the Sutter squad. She posted a 25-0 record in the circle with a 0.73 ERA and she had a .520 batting average with 51 RBI. Catcher Alexa Carino (Sacramento State) led the team in RBI with 60 and in homers with nine and batted .567. Also on the first team was infielder Grace Diaz, who led the team in hits with 61, runs scored (54) and batted .592. The Huskies also landed senior Madison Schamanski on second team. She was second on the team in RBI with 43.
Ganesha was paced by junior pitcher Kalena Lemus (New Mexico State). She came through for a 15-0 record and 0.74 ERA with 148 Ks in 76 innings. Lemus has been joined on first team by senior infielder Mikayla Martinez. She led the Giants with 41 RBI and 38 hits and batted .613. Ganesha’s third all-state small schools player is freshman Lacy Van Tuinen. She led the team iN homers (10), she was second in RBI (35) and she batter .582. Van Tuinen was placed on the second team.
This year’s all-state small schools teams also include the newly crowned all-time state career home run leader — Dani Jackman of University Prep (Victorville) — and several of the reported state strikeout leaders. Jackman put her final career total at 64 to surpass the previous record of 60 set in 2015 by Tannon Snow of Chino Hills (according to our own Cal-Hi Sports state records). Those strikeout leaders include Bakersfield Christian’s Anabell Hinojosa (334), Colusa’s Ava Garcia (307), Calabasas Viewpoint’s Emjay Peck (303) and Woodlake’s Audrina Rodriguez (281).
There wasn’t two dominant unbeaten teams to look at players from for the medium schools teams, but two that had two players each were Capital Christian of Sacramento (which will be called Destiny Christian starting in the fall) and Etiwanda. Capital won the CIF NorCal D2 title and has State Sophomore Player of the Year Ayla Tuua on first team and Iowa-bound first baseman Bree Johnson on second team. Etiwanda won the CIF Southern Section D3 title, then opted out of the regionals. The Eagles have senior pitcher/hitter Alyssa Galindo (San Diego State) on first team and junior infielder Taylor Wren on second team.
We need to clarify that there will be players from CIFSS D2 champion Gahr of Cerritos and a few others from CIFSS D2 that will be going onto the large schools teams and not medium schools.
Home run leaders for the state were plentiful for the medium schools honorees. Sophomores Alyssa Torres of Valley View (20 homers) and Jaeda Diaz of Indio (19 homers) were both first team. Also on first team is Norwalk’s Kendall Nakano (18 homers). Note that we have serious questions about all of the girls from Fulton of Van Nuys listed with 19 or 18 homers and currently don’t accept any of those totals for state record inclusion.
Final Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Some teams that were D2 for the rankings were considered large and some considered medium. Those that were in Division III were all medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools and seniors are eligible.
