More State Record Updates (Team)

For this next set of state football record updates, we focus on most all-time wins for a team, best all-time records for a team and more section playoff records. As was heavily reported last season, Long Beach Poly has passed Bakersfield for being the school with the most all-time wins. De La Salle still easily has the best all-time record and is now actually on track to break two more state records in the next two seasons.

As Bakersfield High has had some difficult seasons in football lately, it has been much different at Long Beach Poly. That’s why the Jackrabbits caught and went past the Drillers last season on the all-time state list for most wins.

The Jackrabbits, under head coach Stephen Barbee and with junior QB Darius Curry leading the way, had an unbeaten regular season in 2022 that included big wins over Serra of Gardena and Mission Viejo. They were knocked out of the CIF Southern Section D1 playoffs in the quarterfinals by Los Alamitos, but with a 10-1 record combined with Bakersfield finishing just 3-7 that put Poly with 808 all-time wins (not counting forfeits) while the Drillers ended last season at 806.

We also always have to note that Bakersfield is given credit for football wins during early years in the 20th century when rugby was played as a substitute for American football.

We were able to see both schools play in their first games last season in Clovis (Poly with a win over Clovis High and BHS with a loss to Buchanan) and it’s going to be hard for the Drillers once again this season compared to Poly (which was loaded with a lot of impressive juniors and sophomores). Expect Poly’s lead in the state record category to continue to grow.

Those are still the only two schools in state history not just with 800 wins or more in their history, but they also are still the only ones at 700 or more. That will still be true after the upcoming season as third on the list is Dos Palos of the CIF Central Section with 679. The Broncos, who will have QB Peyton Van Worth (18 TD passes) returning this season, lost their first four games last season, but bounced back to finish 7-6 before losing to Atascadero in the D5 section playoffs.

Reaching 600 all-time wins for a school is a club that went from 19 to 22 during the 2022 season. One of those three, San Pedro, needed 10 wins to get there and did before the Pirates (10-1) were upset in overtime by Eagle Rock in the first round of the CIF L.A. City Section playoffs. Vallejo (after a 5-4-1 season) and Paso Robles (7-4) were the other two.

One of the schools that is expected to reach 600 wins this season is preseason national No. 1 favorite Mater Dei of Santa Ana. We have the Monarchs at 593 wins since their first season, which unlike all of the others that high, was in 1950 and not in the 1920s or earlier. That total doesn’t include forfeits, which the school itself goes by, so if it does anything to commemorate the 600th win would be on a different win that it would be for our records. It was the same when just retired head coach Bruce Rollinson was credited for his 300th win. San Francisco Lowell (596), Fowler (595) and Tulare (593) also are closing in.

For those schools that won their 500th reported win from last season, the list includes Colton, Patterson, Chino and Inglewood. We also have five schools that could win their 500th games early in the upcoming season: Oxnard, Bishop Amat of La Puente, Fort Bragg, Washington of Easton and Modoc of Alturas.

Highlights From Updates To Teams With
Best Win-Loss Records In State History

*Despite going through 0-10 seasons, both Citrus Hill of Perris and Heritage of Menifee still remain on the all-time state list. Both schools started fielding teams in the 2000s with Citrus Hill beginning in 2005 and Heritage in 2008. They were outstanding from the start and Citrus Hill even recorded a 2016 CIF D2-A state title game win over St. Francis of Mountain View. Heritage also was the team the Hawks defeated earlier that year to win the CIFSS Inland Division title. Even with 0-10 last year, however, Citrus Hill still has a 76.3 winning percentage since 2005 at 148-49. Heritage had its first season in 2008 and hasn’t been the same since the head coach who got the program going, Kraig Broach, left and is now starting another new program at new school Liberty of Winchester. The 0-10 record at Heritage dropped its record to 124-51 for a still more than solid 70.9 winning percentage.

*A 9-4 season at De La Salle of Concord from last year was a major disappointment for the Spartans even though they won the NorCal D1-A title and reached a state final. Despite that total, the Spartans still have an 86.4 all-time win percentage since their first season in 1972. Seven years later in 1979 is when head coach Bob Ladouceur took over the program. The 86.4 mark is also still easily the best in state history. The only other two schools at 80 percent or more are Oaks Christian of Westlake Village (81.6 percent since 2001) and Inderkum of Sacramento (80.4 percent since 2005). Inderkum only went 5-6 last season as the Tigers have struggled a bit since the departure of former head coach Terry Stark.

*Mater Dei of Santa Ana also continues to creep up this list after a 13-1 season from last year put its all-time win percentage since 1950 at 75 percent. Two teams that are expected to join the Monarchs this year in the CIF Southern Section D1 playoffs, Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth and Centennial of Corona, are both still ahead of Mater Dei. Sierra Canyon is at 78.5 percent since 2007 after a 10-5 season in 2023. The program under head coach Jon Ellinghouse continues to add key players and seems to be building in the blueprint of Mater Dei and St. John Bosco and should be closer to getting there this season. Centennial is opening up its season this year against Mater Dei and has a 76.4 winning percentage since 1989. Almost all of Centennial’s banner seasons have come since the arrival of head coach Matt Logan in 1997.

Two New State Records Coming Into
Play For De La Salle’s Iconic Program

Losses last season to Folsom, Serra of San Mateo and St. Mary’s of Stockton further dented the historically great record of the team at De La Salle of Concord, but in one aspect the Spartans were fine. Under head coach Justin Alumbaugh, they once again won the CIF North Coast Section Open Division title and extended their state records for most consecutive CIF section titles to 30 and most consecutive CIF section title game appearances to 38.

As DLS continues to dominate in the NCS playoffs, there are now two new state records that also are getting close to being broken.

The first is for most consecutive section playoff appearances. That one didn’t become a target for the Spartans until last season when La Mirada did not qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the first time in 41 straight seasons. Being placed in the new Gateway League with teams like Warren of Downey and Downey plus taking a 16-14 loss to Mayfair of Lakewood cost the Matadores their record. All three of those teams had senior quarterbacks (including national recruit Nico Iamaleava at Warren) so perhaps this year will be easier for La Mirada. De La Salle’s total reached 40 in a row last year and would hit 41 this season to tie La Mirada’s state record.

The second is for most overall CIF section titles. As Bakersfield has been stuck on 37 since the 2016 in the CIF Central Section, De La Salle has continued to add NCS titles. The Spartans won their 37th section title overall last season and should break Bakersfield’s record this season. The Drillers won their first section title in 1916. The Spartans won their first in 1982.

De La Salle also continues to hold the state record for most league titles in a row. The last time the Spartans were in a league and didn’t win the league title was in 1981. The streak has a lots of stops and starts since DLS hasn’t always been in a league competition. The team has been in recent years in the Mountain Division of the East Bay Athletic League and last year’s title was its 25th straight league title. Schools also on the all-time list with league title streaks still going are St. Mary’s of Stockton (15 in a row since 2007 all under current head coach Tony Franks) and McClymonds of Oakland (13 in a row since 2010 with most of those under current head coach Michael Peters).
