Games have begun in most places around the state for the 2022 season, but all of the exclusive Cal-Hi Sports state records are now all ready to go for that first player who turns in a single-game performance that will need to be checked out. TEAM RECORDS
*Thousand Oaks finished 29-1 in its historic season and while on the way to that record pushed its winning streak to 31 games before it was snapped 2-1 by a Newbury Park squad that the Lancers had defeated twice earlier in the same week. That matched a recent 31-game winning streak by De La Salle of Concord and is tied for ninth on all-time state list.
*Montebello is now shown for 43-0 win last season in 4 1/2 innings against San Gabriel. The Oilers were led by Angel Hernandez, a sophomore at the time, who went 6-for-6 and had 10 RBI. He doesn’t make it as it takes seven hits and 11 RBI for those single game totals.
*Kerman High wasn’t able to win an 11th straight league title in 2020 due to the pandemic, but got it done last spring. The Lions still have a way to go to reach the state record of 17 set in 2009 by La Quinta of Westminster.
*The early innings of a game between Oakmont of Roseville and Rio Linda probably didn’t feel as if anything goofy might happen, but in the fifth the Vikings scored 21 runs and gained an entry into the online records.

INDIVIDUAL RECORDS
*The one player from 2021 who had to be added the most was small school sensation Cameron Butler from Big Valley Christian of Modesto. He probably heard the snickers about small school competition, but had the last laugh when he was picked in the 15th round of the MLB Draft and signed by the Chicago White Sox. Cameron set a state record for highest batting average in a season (70 at-bat minimum) at .741. He also has been added for hits in a season (60), RBI (61), runs scored (59), home runs (15) and doubles (20).
*The Thousand Oaks duo of Maxwell Muncy and Roc Riggio, who were selected in the first and 11 round of the MLB Draft, respectively, both were added to the record book. Muncy made it by hitting four grand slams during the season. Riggio went in both for most walks in a season (42) and for beginning the season by hitting home runs in five straight games. He fell one short of the state record. Muncy’s grand slams is a state record tie.
*The son of Stanford baseball head coach David Esquer gained a record entry for hitting two home runs in one inning. Xavier Esquer also helped his team at Palo Alto to a 21-6 record and is back this spring at Paly for his senior season.
*Another player added in two categories was 2021 grad Quincy Scott from Mission Hills of San Marcos. He stretched his hitting streak that began with some games in 2020 before the shutdown to 29 games before it ended late in the season. The smooth-swinging outfielder for the Grizzlies also had 18 doubles for the year.
*Yet another who had to go on in two different categories was graduated standout Thomas Williams from Ocean View of Huntington Beach. Williams was one of our SoCal Players of the Week when he collected hits in 11 straight at-bats. He also had a game earlier in the season when he smacked four doubles.
*Another team with two players that have been added is Grossmont of El Cajon. The Foothillers went to the CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship, ended 29-7, and were led by Isaiah Gomez (52 runs scored) and Caleb Hommel (55 RBI).
*Pitching didn’t have many new additions, but one that went in was Mark Hu from Harker Academy of San Jose. The Class of 2021 grad tossed a perfect game with 18 strikeouts vs. Priory of Los Altos Hills. The list includes all of those with a no-hitter or perfect game with 18 strikeouts or more so Gabe Burnett of Mountain View with 17 just didn’t quite make it.
*Here’s some other names of players who are now included in these all-time state records: Josh Wood from El Camino Real of Woodland Hills (0.10 ERA); Javi Baeza from Calvary Christian Academy of Chula Vista (54 runs scored); Malcolm Moore from McClatchy of Sacramento (55 RBI); and Aiden Ortega from Hesperia Christian (.667 batting average with 51 at-bats).
