All-State Softball: Medium & Small

The 38th edition of the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Teams continues with these players named from schools that were in CIF section or regional playoffs during the 2021 spring season that made them medium or small school in class. Apologies that most of the seniors are now in college, but not doing these teams after not being able to do them at all in 2020 just wasn’t going to happen.

This year’s All-State Medium Schools and Small Schools softballs have been completed almost as late as possible, but there are still some football teams in the state that have not yet started their 2021 fall seasons and the calendar still says it’s August. It was just very difficult to get out all-state teams in four sports with all of the usual honors in boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball and softball for 2020-21 from the end of June through the Aug. 20 start of many football teams (start of 2021-22).

Leading the way for the medium schools with two players on first team and one on second is 2021 D3 State Team of the Year Notre Dame of Salinas. Two sisters — nationally ranked Class of 2023 recruit Samantha Rey and her older sister, Victoria — are both on first team. Senior catcher Angelita Fuentes, who is now at Iowa State and had an outstanding four years for the Spirits that included being named the Monterey Herald Player of the Year in 2019, is on second team.

Los Angeles Dodgers’ fans also will really like the medium schools first team with pitcher Grace Luderer from Louisville of Woodland Hills and sophomore pitcher-slugger Ella Parker from Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. Grace is a previous all-state honoree after leading the Royals to their first CIF Southern Section title in 2019. She is now at Seattle University and is the granddaughter of legendary Dodgers’ broadcaster Vin Scully. Her dad is St. Francis (La Canada) athletic director Matt Luderer. Ella is the niece of Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts who hit 15 home runs this season and is another top national recruit (according to ExtraInningSoftball.com). When the two OC Batbuster girls and great friends played each other, Parker struck out 11 and hit a two-run homer in a 2-0 Notre Dame win.

Leading the way for small schools all-state teams are D4 State Team of the Year Sutter and D5 State Team of the Year Fowler with two each on first team. Sutter’s duo is junior Riley Wickum as a multi-purpose player along with senior teammate Ella Jolley as an infielder. Fowler pitcher Kamerynn Cordova, a junior pitcher, and Jalyssa Ledesma, a senior infielder, also were both selected to first team.

Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small. Most softball teams that were D2 were considered large except for a few. Those that were in Division III and a few that were in D4 are medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools are eligible.

Here are the 2021 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Teams for medium schools and small schools:

What size school do you consider Selma High School?

For softball, Selma was in D2 section playoffs, and traditionally also would be medium schools. Two real good hitters, but no room for both and couldn’t see a way to choose one over the other. Both back next season as well so can look to pick them later. Exeter is small because of the playoff division it was in.
