This year’s All-State Medium Schools baseball teams include not one but two state players of the year.
The obvious one is the player who got the nod to be Medium Schools Player of the Year, Cal-bound pitcher-hitter Tucker Bougie from Tamalpais of Mill Valley. The other one is an obvious all-state choice as well, but it might not be obvious to many that catcher Malcolm Moore from McClatchy of Sacramento (Stanford commit) is from a medium school. He was previously named as the State Junior Player of the Year.
A teammate of Bougie’s from a Tamalpais team that finished No. 1 in the final D4 state rankings, junior Matteo Bellisimo, also has gained an all-state honor with a second team medium schools selection.
The team that ended No. 1 in the final D3 state rankings, Rio Americano of Sacramento, also has two players who have been named all-state medium schools. Slugging first baseman Will Heron (11 homers) is on first team. Shortstop Elijah Rogalski is on second team.
Small Schools State Player of the Year Braeden Ross from Christian of El Cajon also has been joined by a teammate on the all-state teams. That other player, sophomore Shane Bailey, was among the reported state leaders with 53 hits and had a .491 batting average.
D5 State Team of the Year Colusa (27-1) is the only team from either medium or small school placement to get three players onto the all-state level. Emanuel Frias, a junior infielder/pitcher, is first team small schools on the infield. He batted .458 last season with six homers and 46 RBI. Ethan Lay, a junior infielder/pitcher, is first team small schools as a multi-purpose player. Lay, son of head coach Eric Lay, hit .400 with 32 RBI and also went 8-0 with a 0.32 ERA. Colusa’s third player is second team small schools pitcher Drew Bradbury, who collected 11 pitching wins with a 0.89 ERA.
Note: Other than a few exceptions, schools that were eligible to be in the Cal-Hi Sports Division IV or Division V state rankings are considered small and those that were in Division II and Division III are medium. Some of the schools state-ranked in D2 were considered medium, others large. There also were a couple of D4 state-ranked schools that were placed as medium. In our system, some schools with large enrollments in lower playoff divisions are just too big to be small schools. There also are mixed teams from the CIF Central Coast Section in its D1 (some medium, some large). There is no all-state large schools team, but there is a third team added to the overall teams in which only players from large schools are eligible.
