Even though teams from most CIF NorCal sections haven’t played yet, a month has now passed since the first sanctioned game in Southern California and it’s time to release our first regular season boys basketball State Top 25. There are just as many important updates with regards to how the season may play out as there are important results so far. In this spring basketball season, there are some teams whose schools districts were ready to play right away when the go-ahead was given and others that are still trying to fill schedules.

We knew a long time ago (as early as the summer of 2020) that 2020-21 basketball would be a season unlike any other. If there was a season, that is. For a while it looked bleak but when a lawsuit to allow CIF indoor sports to take place in advance of color tiers laid out by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) was successful, some school districts and coaches were ahead of the curve in satisfying COVID-19 protocols and having sanctioned games line up. Other school districts have been scrambling, to say the least, and games haven’t started for many teams.
