A little girl once born in Oakland has just been elected as Vice President of the United States. But Kamala Harris’ home state has often broken barriers for women and girls, in sports, in public service and in all walks of life. For our slice of the state, which is high school football, here’s a historical look at those girls who’ve been first at kicking field goals, scoring touchdowns and even gaining an all-state accolade.

Although she was born in Oakland and gained notoriety as the District Attorney of San Francisco, Vice President Elect Kamala Harris isn’t from a California high school. She moved with her mother (a prominent geneticist) to Montreal, Canada during her high school years and graduated in 1981 from Westmount High in Quebec.
