After announcing first-ever expanded Cal-Hi Sports All-State Teams for freshmen (Class of 2023), sophomores (Class of 2022) and juniors (Class of 2021), the second post for these teams focuses on those from medium schools and small schools. There will be girls from schools with small enrollments (example: Sierra Canyon) in the large school/open category listed later. These are more based on which CIF state and section playoff divisions each school was placed. Check back over the weekend for Part 3 of these all-state teams (which will be first team overall, second team overall plus large/open school seniors).

State Medium Schools Player of the Year: Jenna Holmes
Already announced as the State Coach of the Year is Ontario Christian’s Paige Liebhardt so now it’s time for the Knights to collect a player of the year honor. Holmes was the leading player for team that won CIF Division II state title after winning state in D3 in 2018. She’s already been named the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Player of the Year and Player of the Year by the Sun-Bulletin (which also could have gone to a large school player). Holmes led Ontario Christian with 19 kills in state championship match against Los Gatos. For the season, she put the hammer down for 438 kills (actually just behind fellow all-state teammate Peyton Tazelaar) and was first on the team in aces plus second on the team in digs. Holmes transferred to Ontario Christian after her sophomore season at United Christian Academy of Rancho Cucamonga.

State Small Schools Player of Year: Paola Jacobs
Coming from a school of just 63 students, Paola and her teammates from Mt. Madonna of Watsonville are used to playing much larger schools and they’re now doing that all the way through the CIF state playoffs (due to competitive equity seeding). Jacobs not only led Mt. Madonna to the CIF Division 5 state title this season, but had a series of eye-opening performances. That’s why she’s now been selected as the state small schools player of the year. The 5-foot-9 senior had 25 kills and 17 digs in the team’s win against Nueva School of San Mateo for the NorCal crown and then in the state final against University of Los Angeles (enrollment more than 1,500) she racked up 24 kills and had seven digs as the Hawks won in four sets. It was the school’s second-ever CIF state title. Earlier in the season, Jacobs had 43 kills over four games in leading the team to a 4-0 record at the Alvarez Varsity Tournament. She’s been all-league the past three seasons in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic Conference (which usually is good in volleyball) and for the season she had 446 kills, 403 digs and 63 aces.
