Saturday section finals added, including the biggie: No. 2 St. John Bosco avenging its only loss with comeback win over No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana in CIF Southern Section Division I championship. Three teams in the top 10 collected CIF section championships on Friday night with No. 3 De La Salle topping Pittsburg in North Coast Section and both No. 9 Corona del Mar and No. 10 Sierra Canyon getting it done in the Southern Section in different divisions. We’ll now wait until Saturday night for the Mater Dei-St. John Bosco showdown then we’ll wait until Sunday to see whether Corona del Mar or Sierra Canyon goes D1-AA for SoCal regional finals with the other one in D1-A.

1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 12-1
LOST to No. 2 St. John Bosco 39-34 on Saturday at Cerritos College with CIF Southern Section D1 title up for grabs. There will be no three CIF Open Division state titles in a row for the Monarchs, who defeated the Braves earlier this season. Alabama-bound QB Bryce Young threw for five TDs and finished with 63 for the season. Mater Dei led 28-12 at halftime and was ahead 28-5 before that, but as head coach Bruce Rollinson told the Orange County Register “the third quarter was a disaster.”
2. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 12-1
Defeated No. 1 Mater Dei 39-34 on Saturday at Cerritos College in CIFSS D1 final. The Braves avenged their only loss and will now try to win their third CIF Open Division state championship in two weeks against De La Salle of Concord. They topped the Spartans in 2013 and 2016 for their previous two titles. Clemson-bound D.J. Uigalelei had a signature outing with more than 440 yards passing and five TDs.
3. De La Salle (Concord) 12-1
Defeated Pittsburg 49-7 to win CIF North Coast Section D1 title. It’s the Spartans’ 28th straight NCS title. For game writeup, CLICK HERE.
4. Mission Viejo 11-1
Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss to No. 1 Mater Dei in CIFSS D1 semifinals.
5. Helix (La Mesa) 11-1
Did not play. Highlanders have already won CIF San Diego Section Open Division title and will wait until Sunday to find out which team it will play in CIF SoCal bowl game (most likely in D1-AA, the second highest division after the Open).
6. Central (Fresno) 13-0
Defeated No. 23 Buchanan (Clovis) 28-21 to win CIF Central Section D1 title. It is the Grizzlies’ second win this season over Buchanan and they won their third straight section crown. They will most likely be in the CIF D1-AA NorCal championship, but won’t find out their opponent until Sunday (probably the CIF Central Coast Section D1 winner that ended up being Serra of San Mateo).
7. Centennial (Corona) 9-2
Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss to No. 2 St. John Bosco.
8. Servite (Anaheim) 7-4*
Did not play. Season complete for the Friars. Their playoff loss was 38-35 to No. 4 Mission Viejo.

9. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 14-0
Defeated No. 13 Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 56-28 to win CIFSS D3 championship. The Sea Kings avenged a loss to the Lancers in last year’s CIFSS D4 final. Washington-bound QB Ethan Garbers passed for 281 yards and four TDs plus he rushed for 105 yards and three other TDs. We will see if the CIF chooses them to play Helix of San Diego in the CIF SoCal D1-AA game or if the CIF goes with them to play in the D1-A game.
10. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 13-1
Defeated No. 26 Chaminade (West Hills) 35-7 to win CIFSS D2 crown. The Trailblazers were the champions of the CIFSS last year in D3, then beat the D2 champ in the D1-A SoCal final before losing to Liberty of Brentwood in the CIF D1-A state championship. They have now won five CIFSS titles in nine years and three of the last four. They’ll be in D1 next year no doubt but will try to win another CIF state title first. We’d pick Corona del Mar for D1-AA and them for D1-A but the CIF could do it the other way around.
11. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 6-5*
Did not play. Season complete for Lions. Their playoff loss was 56-0 to No. 7 Corona Centennial two weeks ago in the CIFSS D1 quarterfinals Has wins over both Bishop Amat and Calabasas.
12. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 9-2*
Did not play. Season complete. Losses are to Mater Dei and JSerra, but went unbeaten in Mission League, including wins over Chaminade (CIFSS D2 finalist) and Loyola of Los Angeles (CIFSS D4 finalist playing Saturday).
13. Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 12-2
LOST to No. 9 Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 56-28 in Friday’s CIFSS D3 championship. The team’s other loss was to Sierra Canyon 13-7. Maybe someone from the CIF can ask Grace Brethren coaches which one is better for SoCal bowl placement.
14. Calabasas 7-3**
Did not play. Season complete. Loss in the CIFSS D1 playoffs was to St. John Bosco.
15. Serra (San Mateo) 11-1
Defeated No. 16 Valley Christian (San Jose) 17-0 on Saturday in CIF Central Coast Section D1 championship. There was an eight-minute scoring drive in the first half that according to reports sucked the life out of the Warriors. The Padres also collected four fumbles and two interceptions.
16. Valley Christian (San Jose) 10-2
LOST to No. 15 Serra (San Mateo) in Saturday’s CCS D1 final 17-0. Turnovers were a problem in the game for the Warriors, who won the CCS Open Division 2 championship last season.
17. Narbonne (Harbor City) 8-1***
***Season complete and forfeits not included. The CIF L.A. City Section crowned Birmingham of Lake Balboa as its new Open Division champion on Friday night after the Patriots defeated Banning of Wilmington 27-20. According to reporters at the game, the section couldn’t present its perpetual trophy to the winning school because Narbonne couldn’t find it.

18. Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) 10-2
LOST on Saturday to No. 25 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 35-27 in CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D1 final on a wet, windy night at Hughes Stadium. The Mustangs had jumped way up into the Top 25 after last week’s big win over Folsom (which was No. 6 at the time).
19. Folsom 10-2
Did not play. Season complete. Bulldogs’ playoff loss was to Monterey Trail. Other loss was to No. 3 De La Salle.
20. Rancho Cucamonga 10-3
Did not play. Season complete. Cougars’ playoff loss to Sierra Canyon in CIFSS D2 semifinals. They won in the quarterfinals 21-7 over Long Beach Poly.
21. Pittsburg 11-2
LOST to No. 3 De La Salle (Concord) 49-7 in NCS D1 championship. For writeup of the contest, CLICK HERE.
22. Carlsbad 10-2
Did not play. Season complete. Lancers’ playoff loss was to No. 5 Helix in CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship last Saturday.
23. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 8-3
Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss for the Dons was to No. 22 Carlsbad in SD Section Open Division semifinals. They’re also the team that had a win over Corona Centennial in early September.
24. Buchanan (Clovis) 9-4
LOST to No. 6 Central (Fresno) 28-21 in CIF Central Section D1 championship. The Bears, who also lost to Central earlier this season with their other losses to De La Salle and to Narbonne (later forfeited), could never quite come back from a 21-7 deficit. The loss also ended a memorable prep career for running back Kendall Milton (next stop for him Georgia).
25. Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 11-2*
Defeated No. 18 Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) 35-27 on Saturday night in Sacramento. It’s the first CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D1 title for the Trojans, who were led by junior QB Justin Lamson with three TD runs and one TD pass.

Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss to No. 9 Corona del Mar in CIFSS D3 semifinals.

Defeated No. 33 St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs) 21-16 in CIFSS D5 championship. Teryon Sweet rushed for 200 yards and three TDs.
Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 12-1
Defeated No. 46 Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 13-10 on Saturday for NCS D4 title. A 34-yard field goal in the closing seconds by Ethan Kollenborn won it for the Cardinals, who didn’t advance into the CIF bowl field last season due to losing a coin flip to Eureka.
Chaminade (West Hills) 7-6
LOST to No. 10 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) 35-7 in CIFSS D2 final.
La Habra 10-3
Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss to No. 13 Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) in CIFSS D3 semifinals.
Liberty (Brentwood) 10-2
Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss to No. 21 Pittsburg in NCS D1 semifinals.
McClymonds (Oakland) 10-0
Defeated Skyline (Oakland) 42-9 on Saturday in CIF Oakland Section title game. The Warriors have now won 10 straight Oakland Section crowns and will be looking to win fourth straight CIF state title but this year that will have to be in a much higher division.
Oceanside 10-4
Defeated No. 32 Lincoln (San Diego) 28-10 for CIF San Diego Section D1 title. The Pirates also have now 14 section titles, which is the most in section history.
San Juan Hills (SJ Capistrano) 11-3
Defeated No. 45 Loyola (Los Angeles) 21-15 to win CIFSS D4 championship. The Stallions had to do it at Loyola’s campus stadium.
San Joaquin Memorial (Fresno) 12-1
Defeated Tulare Western (Tulare) 35-16 on Friday for CIF Central Section D2 crown.
St. Augustine (San Diego) 8-3*
Did not play. Season complete. Playoff loss to No. 5 Helix in SD Sec D1 semifinals.

Looks more like CDM should go 1-AA and SC 1-A (which CalHi has been saying), especially when you check comparative scores against GB.

I do not understand the reason Orange Lutheran is rated way ahead of Long Beach Poly in Max Prep state rankings.Long Beach Poly not only has more wins but beat Orange Lutheran in the play offs makes no sense…
The computer rankings are all based on strength of schedule, even way more than head-to-head. OLu is going to be higher because of the teams it has played not based on the teams it has beaten or lost to. No, it doesn’t make sense. Poly ahead of OLu all day, every day the way we’ve always done it.
De La Salle 31 St. John Bosco 28. You heard it here first. DLS will get out if gate fast including some trickery big plays coupled with SJB turnovers to get two touchdown lead at halftime. 21-7. SJB will make ferocious 4th qtr. comeback but won’t be enough.
