Congratulations to this year’s regular season state stat champions, which couldn’t be officially figured out until this week since it was just after last week that the regular season was complete everywhere in the state. The top reported finishers are Cael Patterson of Escondido Orange Glen (touchdowns scored & rushing yards), Davon Booth of El Monte (points scored), E.J. Kreutzmann of La Jolla Country Day (passing yards), Jared Heywood of Inglewood (TD passes), Jaheim Allen-Pompey of Spring Valley Mt. Miguel (receptions & receiving yards) and John Humphreys of Corona del Mar (TD catches). We also have a list of those from this season who have been added to the updated regular season state record lists in those categories. Among those who are reported to have led the state in the various offensive football categories for the 2019 regular season (mostly according to MaxPreps’ stat lists), one of them set a new state record.
That player was senior Jaheim Allen-Pompey from Mt. Miguel of Spring Valley. Playing for head coach Troy Starr (who had state record setting receiver Steve Smith when he was coaching at Taft of Woodland Hills), Allen-Pompey had 1,921 receiving yards in 10 regular season games. He broke the previous state record (according to our Cal-Hi Sports record lists) of 1,787 yards set just last year by James Odom from Workman (City of Industry). Allen-Pompey did not set a state record for overall receiving yards as was reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune after his last game, a playoff loss. The state record would be for regular season games only.
Allen-Pompey also led the state for the 2019 regular season with 102 catches. He didn’t lead for touchdown catches as his total of 22 was edged by John Humphreys of Newport Beach Corona del Mar with 23. Humphreys did that in nine games (missing one with injury) and he did that despite suffering a bit of the Cal-Hi Sports jinx. In the only game we’ve seen John play in person, he didn’t get a touchdown catch against St. Francis of Mountain View. He didn’t seem to mind, though, because the Sea Kings still won comfortably.

For the regular season leaders in the categories of scoring, touchdowns and rushing yards, we start with a reminder to anyone going off of the leader lists on MaxPreps. It’s great that they provide their lists on their site and we probably give them more clicks than anyone on the planet during a given week, but they don’t actively look for mistakes. They are there and anyone just looking at a leader list and going off it whether it’s a parent sending in an all-state nomination or a reporter writing a story, saying that so-and-so is whatever in the state in whatever category could be incorrect.

Case in point would be if someone looked at the current list for state scoring leaders in football and saw that Luca Diamont of Venice would be the state leader with 44 touchdowns as of this week. But if one digs a little closer and analyzes Diamont’s stats it doesn’t take long to see that the 44 touchdowns are not the ones that he has scored but that would be his total for touchdowns accounted for both as a runner and a passer.
Unlike the passing game categories, the rushing and scoring all-time state lists don’t have nearly as many names being added these days. We only have one new entry for regular season rushing and that would be the 2019 leader, Cael Patterson from Orange Glen of Escondido. He had 2,211 yards in his 10 regular season games. Patterson also was the state regular season champion for touchdowns scored with 33. He wouldn’t be the scoring leader, however, as El Monte’s Davon Booth had nine more two-point conversions than Patterson for a total of 240 points. Booth had 32 regular season TDs. As a junior, Booth ended his season with 44 TDs and 32 two-point conversions for 332 points. He was second in the state behind Fontana Kaiser’s Christian Hunter with 58 TDs nd 348 points.
Other than those two, we had no other new entries into the record book for the 2019 regular season, although we added two seniors from this season who had qualifying totals as juniors for 2018 — Elelyon Noa (Helix, La Mesa) and Cameron Skattebo (Rio Linda).

It’s going to be quite a race to see which quarterback ends up leading the state for the 2019 season for overall touchdown passes. Heading into this week’s playoff games, Jared Heywood of Inglewood had the edge with 60 TDs in 12 games over both Zevi Eckhaus of Culver City and Ethan Garbers of Corona del Mar, who both have 58 in 12 games. All of those quarterbacks also are playing for teams that are 12-0 and conceivably could reach 16-0 while winning CIF state divisional titles.
None of them are likely going to reach the state and national record of 91 set in 2014 by Jake Browning of Folsom, but they could get to Browning’s No. 2 position on the all-time state list of 75, which was his total for his junior season in 2013. JT Daniels of Mater Dei holds the all-time CIF Southern Section record of 67, which definitely is in trouble. Heywood also edged the other two for most regular season TD passes this season with 50 compared to Eckhaus with 49 and Garbers with 47.
In the category of most passing yards, La Jolla Country Day’s E.J. Kreutzmann was the clear leader. He’s up to 4,665 yards as of this week and could become just the ninth in state history to reach 5,000. He’s already surpassed former Torreys’ QB Braxton Burmeister (4,461) for the CIF San Diego Section season record. For the regular season, Kreutzmann led the state by more than 300 yards with a mark of 3,830. That is sixth best in state history. The record of 4,139 was set last year by sophomore Donny Fitzgerald of Coachella Valley (Thermal). He has missed this entire season with a knee injury and we hope will be back terrorizing the Imperial Valley as a senior next year.

Eddie Allain (Norte Vista, Riverside)
Here’s a junior to watch for next season. Eddie only had 157 yards in a CIFSS D10 playoff loss last week to Simi Valley, but the week before he had 32 carries for 339 yards and five TDs in a 46-20 victory over Rancho Mirage. Playing for a school well known in recent years for running the ball, Allain ended the season with 1,984 yards and 32 TDs.
Zevi Eckhaus (Culver City)
It took a few days for the Centaurs to report his totals, but when they beat Chino Hills 62-35 last Friday in the CIFSS D5 playoffs it now shows that Zevi passed for 564 yards and five TDs. He completed 29 of 47 passes and nearly reach his season high of 577 yards that was done in that 55-52 overtime victory vs. Palos Verdes.
Walker Eget (West Ranch, Valencia)
Playing with thoughts of the students and staff at rival school Saugus after the school shooting there earlier in the week, Eget passed for seven touchdowns and went 27 of 42 for 299 yards in a wild and wacky 52-51 win in the CIFSS D7 playoffs over Wilson of Long Beach. We would have gone with him as a SoCal player of the week but have earlier this season featured a different West Ranch player for defense.
Armon Estrada (Strathmore)
A four-year varsity player who has at least long-snapped in every game since his freshman year for a team that has been in two straight CIF state finals (16-0 two years ago), Estrada appeared in his 58th varsity game last week and should get to 59 this week in a CIF Central Section D5 semifinal vs. Caruthers. From our research, that would be a new state record, surpassing the previous best of 57 set last year by Jayden Daniels of San Bernardino Cajon. We were unsure if Cajon had any other four-year varsity players during Jayden’s years there. Current junior Mikey Zele of Simi Valley Grace Brethren has started at quarterback for the school’s last two teams that have played 16 games and entering this week has played in 44 varsity games.
Cody Epps (Mater Dei, Santa Ana)
Put his name into the state record for TD catches in a game with five to help the Monarchs get past Bishop Amat of La Puente 63-23 in the CIFSS D1 playoffs. Epps enters this week’s game vs. Mission Viejo with 23 for the season.
Mikey Ficher (Tulare Western)
Head coach Ryan Rocha raves about Ficher and what he did to lead his team past Dinuba 47-10 last week with his all-round play was noteworthy. Ficher rushed for 134 yards on 9 carries on runs of 17, 20 yards and returned a punt for 61 yards, and completed one pass for a touchdown. Mikey also has set a Central Section Record by returning four interceptions for touchdowns in one season.
Tyler Harrison (Paradise)
This sophomore is one of the main reasons the 11-0 Bobcats have become the literal team that is rising from the ashes this season. In last week’s CIF Northern Section D3 playoff game vs. Live Oak (Paradise won 56-0), Harrison surged for 307 yards rushing on just 11 carries and scored five TDs. It was his third straight 300-yard game and he’s now gone over 2,000 yards for the season.
Brady Hughes (Temecula Valley, Temecula)
Watch out for the Golden Bears in the CIFSS D7 playoffs. The Southwestern League tri-champion advanced last week with a 21-20 triumph over Carter of Rialto as Hughes blocked a field goal late in the fourth quarter that would have changed the lead. Brady also led the way on offense with 254 yards rushing.
E.J. Kreutzmann & Zach Alligood (La Jolla Country Day)
Reported state passing leader hit on 21 of 35 passes for 419 yards and six TDs during Country Day’s 48-29 win against Montgomery of San Diego in the SD Sec D4 playoffs. Alligood also is a reported state leader for tackles (a category we don’t do state records for because over the years a lot of totals we’ve seen we just don’t think are correct). He had 20 against Montgomery and now has a reported total of more than 200 for the season.
Hector Nava Jr. (Porterville)
He has been on a roll lately with 339 yards on 15 of 26 passing with three touchdowns and rushed for 87 yards on 11 carries & one score in a 40-6 win over Cesar Chavez of Delano. Isaiah Ellis also was outstanding for the Panthers with 158 yards, 8 receptions, one touchdown and rushed for 130 yards on 17 carries, two touchdowns.
Nathan Price (Monte Vista, Danville)
The sophomore kicker booted a 33-yard field goal with just 4.2 seconds left to give the Mustangs a 9-6 win over arch-rival San Ramon Valley in the CIF North Coast Section D1 playoffs. Price made amends for missing a PAT when the two teams met in a regular season finale just two weeks earlier.
Ivan Robledo (St. Helena)
For the second time this season, Ivan scored six TDs in one game. He did it last Friday in a 54-39 triumph over Lower Lake in the NCS D6 playoffs. The sophomore also rushed for 329 yards on 39 carries.
Marco Siderman (Westlake, Westlake Village)
He closed the season strongly with 384 yards passing and four TDs in Westlake’s CIFSS D3 playoff loss to Grace Brethren. In Siderman’s next to last regular season outing vs. Newbury Park (Westlake won 63-28), he had 509 yards passing and seven TDs.
Ke’ontae Springs (Madison, San Diego)
In his team’s 40-28 victory over Grossmont of La Mesa in the CIF San Diego Section D1 playoffs, Springs broke loose for 349 yards rushing and scored five TDs. He also had an interception on defense and had 71 yards receiving.
Payton Stokes (Saratoga)
His season came to a close in a 62-43 loss to Carmel in the CCS playoffs. Stokes kept the Falcons in it throughout and ended 28 of 39 passing for 432 yards and three TDs. He also rushed for 167 yards on 16 carries and scored twice.
Deshon Thompson (Northview, Covina)
Two weeks ago, he led the Vikings past Rowland of Rowland Heights 52-14 in the CIFSS playoffs with seven catches for 201 yards and one TD, four rushes for 41 yards and two scores plus he came up with two interceptions on defense. Thompson’s season ended last week in a 38-35 loss to Ventura. He will have 65 catches for 1,242 yards and 11 TDs for his final season totals.
Bruce Walker (St. Pius X-St. Matthias, Downey)
In a CIFSS D14 playoff victory over Ganesha of Pomona, Walker came through with 11 tackles, two touchdown catches, an interception returned for a score and a forced fumble.
