Because of pool play in the CIF Southern Section Open Division, there is now the possibility of a team losing a game but still advancing to the February 23 championship. There were no upsets in CIFSS pool play in the first round, but we’ll see if that holds true for two rounds this week. There was no change in the top two spots for this week’s rankings, but thanks to a breakthrough win by Clovis North of Fresno over previous No. 3 Clovis West, plus other factors relating to that result, there’s another reshuffling after that. We also have one newcomer this week, but that team isn’t really a newcomer.

The state top-ranked Trailblazers had little trouble after starting CIF Southern Section Open Division pool play with a 68-41 Pool A victory over a Troy of Fullerton team that has been knocking on the door of the rankings the last few weeks. As usual, it was the big three junior trio of Alexis Mark, Vanessa De Jesus and Ashley Chevalier paving the way for the win. Mark had 19 points and eight rebounds, De Jesus added 14 points and seven assists and Chevalier also had 14 points with five assists. Next up is a Redondo Union team that lost on the road at Bishop Montgomery. In a nonleague matchup in late January when the teams were No. 1 and No. 3 in these rankings, the Trailblazers won easy, 61-39.
