For this final post in this series for this season, it’s a bit different in that we are highlighting what happened in our girls game from earlier this week in Manteca while previewing an attempt by Roseville High’s boys to complete a surprising bid to win the Capital Valley Conference title. Monday, Feb. 4 Girls Basketball
Manteca 77, Kimball (Tracy) 67
The Lady Buffs can thank their own version of Klay Thompson in surging past the Jaguars and all but assuring themselves of the Valley Oak League championship. Sophomore guard Marissa Serrano is that hot shooter and in the third quarter on Monday she connected on four 3-pointers and had 17 of her 24 points as Manteca overcame a 37-32 lead by Kimball earlier in that quarter. Manteca held on in the fourth quarter and after winning on Wednesday of this week over Weston Ranch only needed to beat East Union of Manteca to win the league title. Kimball came into Monday’s game with just one league loss as well and no doubt would have been in the same situation as the Lady Buffs had it won. The teams were expected to enter the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs with overall records of 20-7 and 22-5 overall. Serrano wasn’t even the high scorer of the game for Manteca. Teammate Kyaria Jacobs stood out the most in the other three quarters and ended with 26 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kimball had a more balanced attack, but both Isbella Lecap (15 points) and Alicia Leonardo (11 points) reached double figures.

Friday, Feb. 8 Boys Basketball
Inderkum (Sacramento) at Roseville
The venerable old gym at Roseville should be vibrating as the Tigers will try to wrap up the Capital Valley Conference title with a win over other Tigers in the league. At the start of the season, it’s safe to say Roseville (20-7 overall) wasn’t considered a league favorite. Not only did head coach Greg Granucci’s club had to overcome an 0-4 start, but the CVC also is the new home of city rival Woodcreek High. Just two years ago, Woodcreek played for the CIF Open Division state championship at Golden 1 Center and previously was battling Folsom and others for supremacy in the much more difficult Sierra Foothill League. But a lot of the players from those recent Woodcreek teams are gone and head coach Paul Hayes has retired. Still, it’s obvious it has meant a lot for the Roseville players to be able to have two wins over the Timberwolves and now be in position to clinch the league title. Beating Inderkum (19-8 overall) will not be easy. Those Tigers won earlier this week 74-66 over Yuba City as senior Yaadvir Dhaliwal pumped in a season-high 29 points. Inderkum comes into the night at 9-2 in league and could force a co-title with Roseville, which won this week 78-60 against Bella Vista of Fair Oaks. Both Roseville and Inderkum lost recently to River Valley of Yuba City, but both beat River Valley in the first round of league play. An Inderkum win on Friday coupled with a River Valley win also would elevate River Valley into a tie for the league title as well. In addition to Dhaliwal, Inderkum has been led by a promising sophomore, 6-foot-2 Xavier Cates (10.9 ppg) and has three others averaging more than nine ppg. Roseville has a great sophomore as well in Josh Alger, who is hitting for more than 12 ppg and is a top sophomore to watch as a baseball pitcher. Senior guard Jaylen Solich has been Roseville’s leading scorer (15 ppg) and is the team’s floor general with more than five assists per outing.
