Thursday, Jan. 31 Girls Basketball
Colfax at Center (Antelope)
The folks at Center are already using the Fantag app, but the reason this game has been selected is that it should be the last, shimmer of hope that any girls team in the Pioneer Valley League has of making a challenge to Colfax. The reality is that the Falcons aren’t just the dominant team in the PVL with a 20-3 overall record, they are a team to watch for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section D3 playoffs and maybe even more in the future. Center starts this week with just one league loss to Colfax, but will have to play out of its minds on its home floor to come close to a team that won by 40 points on its own home floor a few weeks ago and has breezed past all of its league opponents. Center’s top player has been center Maylene Hughes, who averages 14.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Of Colfax’s three losses, two were to out-of-section foes and the other was in the first game to D2 Del Oro of Loomis. The Falcons are comprised of almost all underclass standouts, including junior Grace Bliss (20.8 ppg, 8.7 rebs), sophomore Jazzy Owens (12.2 ppg) and sophomore Natalie Lundberg (4.7 assists).
Friday, Feb. 1 Boys Basketball
Vanden (Fairfield) at Wood (Vacaville)
Assuming both teams win earlier in this week, when the Vikings head eastbound to Vacaville to take on the Wildcats it will be likely the deciding game for the Monticello Empire League title. Wood already has a 71-65 win at Vanden, but that result snapped a 17-game win streak by the Vikings against league opponents. And if Vanden’s Jonathan Cobbs gets hot from beyond the 3-point arc, then certainly it could be a different outcome and one that would put the two teams in a tie for first place. Cobbs hit 11 shots from 3-point land in one game this season against Rio Linda and has frequently hit near or above 30 points. Teiano Hardee also had 19 points in that earlier first game vs. the Wildcats. Wood’s strength in an 18-5, 6-0 campaign so far this season is that it’s a number of different players that have shown they can be explosive scorers. Head coach Mark Wudel doesn’t put his team’s stats into MaxPreps, but a quick search showed a 26-point game for Angelo Harris, a 26-point game for Ricky Holland and a 21-point game vor Jeremiah Jones. The Wildcats also have some size with 6-foot-6 junior Landon Seaman and 6-foot-7 sophomore Nem Drca.
