We had another change at the top of the state rankings with Windward of Los Angeles regaining the No. 1 spot after losing it to Pinewood of Los Altos Hills two weeks ago. The Wildcats, however, will wait less than 24 hours before playing new No. 2 Sierra Canyon. Also in the top 10 group, Carondelet of Concord moves up after its big win last week over Pinewood and in the bottom 10 the biggest moves were by Rosary of Fullerton and Sacramento. There were no newcomers, but that could very well change after this week’s action and games from the MLK weekend.

There were a lot of folks weighing in after the last rankings, with everyone wanting to be off the record, who disagreed with dropping the Wildcats from the top spot since the Nevada Centennial of Las Vegas team they lost to convincingly in a 61-49 defeat at the Mater Dei Matt Denning Nike Hoops Classic is one of the nation’s top teams. The reality is that Centennial was missing Arizona State-bound Eboni Walker in a loss to Salesian of Richmond at the Nike TOC. However, against Windward, Walker had 18 points and 19 rebounds to offset a game-high 22-point and five-assist performance by Windward’s UCLA-bound senior Charisma Osborne. After the loss, head coach Vanessa Nygaard and her girls then posted a less than impressive 68-62 home win over an Anaheim Fairmont Prep team that has 13 losses, including a 20-point defeat to the Sierra Canyon team Windward meets on Tuesday to determine who takes the cat-bird seat in the next rankings. For this week, Nygaard and her girls are back on top with the demise of Pinewood, but unless they win the Gold Coast League showdown on Tuesday their second stay on top will be almost as short as Pinewood’s was last week.
