In most career state record categories, Cajon of San Bernardino QB Jayden Daniels is behind former Folsom QB Jake Browning, but there is one state record of Browning’s that he did break. In honor of Jayden announcing his verbal commitment on Thursday of this week, here’s a rundown of his records. Note: All according to Cal-Hi Sports (no other state record compilations exist from any other source).
Career passing yards — Daniels is CIF Southern Section record holder and No. 2 in state history at 13,827. Record holder is Jake Browning (Folsom) 16,775 from 2012-2014. Previous CIFSS record holder was Tristan Gebbia (Calabasas) 13,109 yards set in 2016.
Career TD passes — Daniels is CIFSS record holder and No. 2 in state history at 170. Record holder is Jake Browning with 229. Note that Jake didn’t play as a freshman at Folsom compared to others on state lists. His totals for sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Daniels broke previous CIFSS record of 162 that was set after Murrieta Valley’s first playoff game this year by Hank Bachmeier. Hank broke the record of 152 set last year by JT Daniels (Mater Dei) but only had the record for a few weeks.
Career Total Offense TDs — Adding Jayden’s 40 rushing touchdowns to his passing total of 170 gets him to 210 but that’s still not enough for Browning state record, which is 242 (counting 13 rush TDs for him over three seasons).
Career Total Offense Yards — Bingo, we have a new state record for Jayden Daniels. Jake Browning didn’t run for much (most TDs were on sneaks) and only had 110 career rushing yards. Adding Jayden’s career rush yards of 3,579 gives him 17,406 and a new record. Browning’s career total offense counts to 16,885.
Browning is now, of course, quarterbacking at Washington and has helped the Huskies win two Pac-12 titles in three years. Too bad Washington was not on Jayden’s list of finalists.
