State Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard

With NorCal games getting postponed once again with very unhealthy air, there were games from the CIF Central Section south all the way to San Diego on Friday night. On Saturday, however, the CIF Central Coast Section playoffs (including state No. 10 St. Francis of Mountain View) were able to be played at locations out of the bad air. The biggest winners on Friday, naturally, were in the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals as No. 1 St. John Bosco and No. 3 Mater Dei clinched berths to play again in next week’s championship. The highest ranked team outside of the CIFSS D1 bracket to lose on Friday was No. 13 Calabasas to Upland. Also on Saturday, Cathedral Catholic topped Torrey Pines to win CIF San Diego Section Open Division title.

(Rankings based on State Top 50 released last week)
(Through reported results of Saturday, Nov. 17)
*Indicates forfeit result not included.

1. St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 13-0
Defeated No. 6 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 56-10. With win, Braves will play defending CIF Open Division state champion Mater Dei next week at Cerritos College for CIF Southern Section D1 title. This will be the third straight year those two rivals have played in this game and neither of them has had a much of a close game really in two years (vs. a California team) other than when playing each other. Junior QB D.J. Uigalelei also had a big night to further push ahead as the leading Mr. Football State Player of Year candidate. He threw for 292 yards and five TDs in the first half (12 of 14) and had a sixth TD pass of 71 yards in the second half to Breaux Collins.

2. Centennial (Corona) 12-1
LOST to No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 48-14. CIF Southern Section D1 semifinals. It was a nightmare for the Huskies as they gave up four interception return TDs in the first half and were never in the game. Last year’s team when it lost at this point of the season to Bosco was suffering from injuries. This year’s wasn’t in that situation so many were expecting it to be a close game.

3. Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 12-1*
Defeated No. 2 Centennial (Corona) 48-14. CIF Southern Section D1 semifinals. The Monarchs were the No. 3 seed so we weren’t alone in having Centennial higher. Elias Ricks put his name in the state record book when he returned three of those four pick sixes for the Monarchs’ first three scores of the game. The state record for most pick sixes in a game is five, accomplished twice. MD with four in a game of that magnitude is just nuts.

4. De La Salle (Concord) 11-0
Did not play. Spartans weren’t supposed to play this week regardless of all the postponements in the CIF North Coast Section. They won last week 38-0 vs. Pittsburg in NCS Open semifinals, but instead of playing next week in the final they will have to wait an extra week since that other semifinal between Liberty of Brentwood and Clayton Valley of Concord has been postponed twice due to the Camp Fire.

5. Folsom 10-1
Did not play. Head coach Kris Richardson’s squad and the entire CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs were called off for this week for health reasons, specifically the unprecedented high AQI numbers in the last few days in the Sacramento region. Folsom will now have its semifinal game next Friday vs. St. Mary’s of Stockton.

6. Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) 12-1
LOST No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) 56-10. There was a brief moment when the Lions were in it early after Zach Charbonnet broke loose for a 61-yard TD. But with no pressure on Bosco QB D.J. Uigalelei it was open season on the Oaks Christian secondary.

7. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano) 9-3
Season complete. Head coach Pat Harlow’s team lost in the CIFSS D1 quarterfinals last week 35-34 to No. 6 Oaks Christian. Despite lopsided nature of Bosco’s win over Oaks, the teams behind in the rankings didn’t play or struggled this week so won’t be any downward rankings movement for either team.

8. Liberty (Brentwood) 10-0
Did not play. Lions have had their scheduled game in the NCS Open Division semifinals with No. 23 Clayton Valley of Concord called off for another week due to poor air quality in Bay Area. With the CIF state playoffs themselves pushed back one week, that will give time for the NCS to have this game next week and then its NCS Open final the following week.

9. Central (Fresno) 12-0
Defeated Bakersfield 46-34. CIF Central Section D1 semifinals. Defending champion Grizzlies will now try to repeat in next Friday’s championship at home vs. Liberty (Bakersfield). The Drillers kept pace throughout and were tied at 34-34 with 9:53 left. Central QB Trent Tompkins’ 30-yard TD run in the final minutes extended the lead.

10. St. Francis (Mountain View) 10-1
Defeated Aragon (San Mateo) 34-13 in CIF Central Coast Section Open 2 playoffs that were played Saturday. Ryan Daly had three TD passes as the Lancers scored all of their touchdowns in the first half. They will be in semifinals next week, finals after that.

11. Torrey Pines (San Diego) 10-1
LOST to No. 12 Cathedral Catholic 28-17 on Saturday in CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship. Mac Bingham rushed for two TDs to lead the Falcons, who led 14-0 and 17-14 but were outplayed in the second half.

12. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 10-1*
Defeated No. 11 Torrey Pines (San Diego) 28-17 on Saturday in SD Sec Open final. A 3-yard run by Shawn Poma gave the Dons a 21-17 lead and they extended it on a TD reception by Poma from junior QB D.J. Ralph. This is the 12th section football title for Cathedral Catholic, which now waits until next Sunday to find out its opponent for the CIF SoCal regional finals. We think it’s pretty certain that will be in D1-AA (same as Helix last year and same division the Dons won state title in two years ago).

13. Calabasas 10-3
LOST to Upland 30-21. CIF Southern Section D2 semifinals. For another season and with a new head coach the Coyotes have fallen short in the postseason once again. Upland was probably the preseason pick for CIFSS D2 and barely scraped by in its first two playoff games but on this night just played a great game.

14. Narbonne (Harbor City) 9-3
Defeated Birmingham (Lake Balboa) 63-23. CIF L.A. City Section Open Division playoffs. The Gauchos will be playing Garfield of Los Angeles in next week’s final. Garfield upended previously unbeaten Eagle Rock in the other semifinal.

15. Mission Viejo 10-2*
Season complete. Head coach Chad Johnson’s club lost in the CIFSS D1 quarterfinals 56-17 last week to No. 3 Mater Dei. The Diablos have too many quality wins to be much lower in these rankings.

16. Buchanan (Clovis) 9-3
LOST to No. 43 Liberty (Bakersfield) 24-23. CIF Central Section D1 semifinals. This was a team the Bears had beaten 27-13 earlier this season and they were looking to play Central of Fresno again in a title game rematch as well as a rematch of league loss from earlier this season.

17. Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley) 13-0
Defeated Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 41-38. Trailing 38-28 in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs took the lead on a 54-yard run by Jamar Simpson and watched as a possible game-winning field goal at the finish by the Knights came up short. Look for them to be No. 13 in the next rankings.

18. Bishop Amat (La Puente) 8-3*
Season complete. Lancers lost in their first round game of the CIFSS D1 playoffs to No. 15 Mission Viejo. They won Mission League title that included CIFSS D2 close semifinal loser Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks).

19. Villa Park 10-2*
LOST to Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) 34-31 (OT). After the two teams were tied 28-28 at end of regulation, Spartans took 31-28 lead on a field goal. When Grace Brethren got ball, however, it scored a touchdown to get the win. CIFSS D4 semifinals.

20. Lutheran (Orange) 5-6*
Season complete. Two of this team’s losses were to No. 2 Centennial, including the one that ended the season in the CIFSS D1 playoffs (first round). All of the other losses also were to higher-ranked teams.

21. Central Catholic (Modesto) 10-1
Did not play. A scheduled game vs. 11-0 Inderkum (Sacramento) in the SJS D2 playoffs was postponed to next week. Waiting for the winner will be No. 29 Del Oro (Loomis), which learned on Friday that it would be placed directly into the final when its opponent, Jesuit of Carmichael, had to be removed from the playoffs over the use of an ineligible player.

22. Monterey Trail (Elk Grove) 11-0
Did not play. High-scoring Mustangs will be playing Oak Ridge of El Dorado Hills (8-3) in next week’s SJS D1 semifinals after this week’s games were postponed.

23. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach) 11-1-1
Defeated Camarillo 48-17. CIFSS D4 semifinals. The top-seeded team in that bracket will play No. 35 Grace Brethren (Simi Valley) in next week’s final. Only loss is to JSerra.

24. Clayton Valley (Concord) 9-1
Did not play. Team that had a huge opening night win over Pittsburg (NCS Open semifinalist) now slated to meet No. 8 Liberty (Brentwood) next Friday in NCS Open semifinals. By the time some of these NCS teams play next it will be 29 days since last game.

25. Upland 11-2
Defeated No. 13 Calabasas 30-21. CIFSS D2 semifinals. The victory over Calabasas follows wins against Heritage (Menifee) and Norco. Upland’s losses are to Mission Viejo and Rancho Cucamonga.
