There is a long way to go for this season, but for a performance on one night, especially because it was in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 national rankings game, we’d rank what we saw of the Braves last Saturday as one of the best we’ve seen in our nearly 40 years of doing Cal-Hi Sports. Their 41-18 win over previous state and national No. 1 Mater Dei was up there with Rialto Eisenhower in the 1993 CIF Southern Section top division title game, last year’s Monarchs in the CIF Open Division state final, the 2001 De La Salle of Concord squad when it beat Long Beach Poly and the 2006 Oaks Christian team on the night it beat St. Bonaventure of Ventura in a state No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. It was mentioned in last week’s rankings of the possibility that head coach Jason Negro and staff were holding back on some of their packages for this game and several media members who’ve seen the Braves more than once earlier this season agreed with that at halftime when Bosco already was leading 27-10. As mentioned in our game writeup, junior QB D.J. Uigalelei threw for five touchdowns with three of those going to senior Jake Bailey. The Braves will take their new unanimous national and state No. 1 ranking to play at Santa Margarita in the next game. The Eagles are winless so far in the Trinity League so it should be an easy win.
