Bryce Young 16-for-16 in the book

There seems to be many wondering about a 16-for-16 passing performance and where it might rank in the record books. That outing was turned in last Friday for state No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana by junior quarterback Bryce Young when the Monarchs rolled past visiting St. Mary’s of Stockton 56-0. Yes, we do have a category in the Cal-Hi Sports state football record book for best perfect passing performances and here’s where Bryce Young’s outing stands:

*It’s not a state record. The best we have ever seen is 23-for-23 in 2012 by Tucker Mendonca from Mt. Whitney of Visalia. He did it in a 44-17 win against his school’s arch-rival from Redwood of Visalia and had 416 yards.

*Mt. Whitney is not a CIF Southern Section school, nor is it in Orange County and the next highest reported totals in state history are 16-for-16. Those are from Nathan Ford of Palo Alto in 2003, Daniel Robbins of Chico in 2012, Mitch Daniels of Concord in 2014 and Nathan Lamb of Tulare in 2016. Lamb is still at Tulare this season and had his 16-for-16 night as a sophomore in a 42-35 win vs. Delano.

*If you are still with us, none of those other schools listed are from the CIFSS or Orange County, either. Therefore, Bryce Young’s perfect night would go down as the best of its kind in CIFSS and Orange County history. The best previous total we have from both sub-categories of the state record list would be 14-for-14 by Shane Foley from Newport Harbor of Newport Beach from a 1984 game in which the Sailors beat Bellflower 49-7.

*We have one 15-for-15 total from an L.A. City Section player, another 14-for-14 and three more at 13-for-13, including Blake Wolfe of Sanger who did it last season. One of those at 12-for-12 is former NFL QB Mark Sanchez of Mission Viejo.
