Folsom’s freaky 56-point half against Chaminade forces the Bulldogs to have to move up among the top 10 of this week’s rankings and they go from No. 8 to No. 6. They now are behind only the projected top four seeds for the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs along with De La Salle. We also have several teams getting major bumps among these first 25, including new No. 23 Norco (up from 38) and new No. 24 Serra of Gardena (up from 30).

For the third consecutive week, Mater Dei dropped the hammer on an opponent and held it scoreless. This time is was St. Mary’s (Stockton) 56-0. The last time the Monarchs pitched three shutouts in a row was in 1997 when they blanked Hawthorne, Irvine and Servite (Anaheim) in succession. MD has allowed just 14 points in four games (3.5 per) — all to Bishop Amat (La Puente) in the first game. They won that one on the field but later had to forfeit on paper. The offense was near perfect as QB Bryce Young was perfect, going 16-of-16 for 328 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. All the scores went to Horace “Bru” McCoy (60, 43, 15 and 60 yards). The Monarchs have a bye and then prepare to face mighty IMG Academy of Florida at the Santa Ana Bowl on September 21. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports West: Prime Ticket. This will be the final time a California team will be allowed to play IMG or any other school that is only an associate member of a state association under a new guideline passed by the CIF Federated Council last May. For IMG to get around that rule, it would have to be playing in the Florida state playoffs and it’s doubtful the FHSAA is going to go for that.
