Presented by Blast Athletics, the Cal-Hi Sports 2017 all-state teams continue with the release of these players representing medium schools. With more schools now being considered “medium” than ever before due to competitive equity playoff systems, this year’s medium schools all-state roster has been expanded to a third team for the first time. We now have 45 additional honorees, but just as we’ve done for many years for the large schools, the third team is for seniors only. Those schools this year getting more than one player on the 2017 Cal-Hi Sports Medium Schools All-State Teams include Cajon of San Bernardino (three on first team), Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland (two on first team) and Charter Oak of Covina (two on first team). Blast Athletics is a new partner of Cal-Hi Sports and is about to become one of the hottest fundraising options for high school activities & athletics programs in the state. For details, CLICK HERE.

Medium Schools State Player of the Year Kazmeir Allen of Tulare wasn’t the only one who has been named to this year’s Cal-Hi Sports All-State Medium Schools Football Teams with hard-to-believe statistical totals.
Presented by Blast Athletics, this year’s first team includes three from Cajon of San Bernardino who had to all be that high plus another running back alongside Allen with record-breaking tendencies.
Allen, headed to UCLA and also considered runner-up to Mr. Football State Player of the Year honoree JT Daniels of Santa Ana Mater Dei, set a national record with 72 touchdowns for the 14-1 Tribe. He also led the state with 3,336 rushing yards.
The Cajon threesome would be quarterback Jayden Daniels, receiver Darren Jones and defensive lineman Jeremiah Martin. Daniels, already named as the Riverside Press-Enterprise Offensive Player of the Year, passed for 5,139 yards and 62 TDs and rushed for 1,292 yards and 15 scores. Jones, also a junior like Daniels, was his favorite target. He caught 102 passes for 2,094 yards and 28 TDs. Martin, a senior and the Defensive Player of the Year by the San Bernardino Sun/Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, is weighing college offers from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oregon, Washington and even Alabama. He had 30.5 sacks to threaten the state record of 34 and also had 47 tackles for loss.
Both Tulare and Cajon shared the same fate in the CIF D2-AA state bowl games. They both lost to Serra of San Mateo. The Padres, however, as members of one of the state’s toughest leagues, aren’t considered “Medium” schools. Look for their players on the overall or “Large” school all-state teams still to come.
As with the first team all-state juniors, Daniels’ rushing abilities gave us the opportunity to list him as one of the six multi-purpose players. The one that got the more traditional quarterback slot was Spencer Petras from Marin Catholic of Kentfield. Hailing from the same program as NFL No. 1 draft pick and L.A. Rams’ quarterback Jared Goff, Petras passed for 4,157 yards and 50 TDs for the Wildcats this season. He also has committed to Iowa after previously going with Oregon State. Petras was recently named the SF Metro Player of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle.
For this year’s all-state medium first team, because we went with a tight end, there was only one other running back chosen to go with Allen. That wasn’t that hard of a choice, either, as Branden Rankins from Aquinas of San Bernardino rushed for 3,032 yards and 43 TDs. Rankins also became the all-time leader for San Bernardino County with 8,745 yards for his career and also ended with 106 career touchdowns. We’re going to be updating all of the single-season and career state rushing records soon and we can tell you Rankins is way up there for his career.
The tight ends both for first team and second team medium schools are among the most prolific pass-catching tight ends we’ve ever covered. The pick easily could have gone to Tai Le of Corona del Mar for first team, but instead it went in a close call to Spencer Webb from Christian Brothers of Sacramento. Webb, headed to Oregon, caught 61 passes for 1,063 yards and 23 TDs. Le, headed to Stanford, had 52 catches for 1,084 yards and 14 TDs. For career totals, Le has 145 catches and 43 TDs. Forget about tight ends, for all receivers, 43 career TDs is a great number.
Another unique feature of this year’s first team is that there are two defensive backs from the same team — Jermaine Braddock and Michael Anyabwu from Charter Oak of Covina. We could have tried to get Braddock on as multi-purpose because he did catch a lot of passes for the Chargers and is a wide receiver recruit, but he fit best on defense, especially with a reported five interception return touchdowns. Anyabwu was among the state leaders in interceptions with 10. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune already has selected Braddock as its overall Player of the Year.
Note: Schools broken down into large, medium and small in most cases based on section playoff divisions but also on where they’ve been traditionally. We also will not generally consider a school with 2,000 enrollment or more small school at all no matter what section playoff division that school is placed. With that said and with previous “small” schools moving up due to competitive equity playoffs, we now have more medium schools than we have had before. This has caused us to expand the medium school teams with a third team now being named in addition to first team and second team. All CIF Southern Section D1 and D2 schools are considered large and there are some in other divisions also considered large due to being moved up in state playoff divisions (Paraclete). Plus, if a school with a large enrollment from a traditional D1 league (South Coast, Big VII, Southwestern, etc.) is playing in a lower CIFSS division we are not going to consider that school “medium.”
