Here’s some record updates and highlights of top coaches, players & teams from the recent week as reported to us from CIF Central Section historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. Bob has done phenomenal work on behalf of CIF Central Section schools, athletes and coaches for more than 40 years.
COACHES WATCH
Brad Felder of Hanford and Mark Hatton of Tulare began the week tied at 499 boys basketball career wins.
Hatton started the last week with 497, then his team posted wins over Lindsay 56-50, Central Valley Christian of Visalia 34-22 and lost to Monache of Porterville 53-51. The Tribe then won their first game of this week on Tuesday over Delano 68-37, giving Hatton his 500th win.
Felder’s team had wins last week over Hanford West 57-53 and Washington Union 71-59, but on Wednesday of this week the Bullpups lost at home 58-57 to Mt. Whitney of Visalia. Felder therefore will have to wait at least until Friday for his 500th.
Hatton became just the second coach in section history to get to 500 and Felder would be the third. Mark Hutson, the former Bakersfield High School coach, leads the section with 511 wins.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Senior Anthony Martinez of Clovis scored a career high of 39 points, which is the third best in school history, in the Tri-River League opener, but the Cougars lost 71-70 to Buchanan of Clovis. Spencer Heimerdinger had 25 points for the winners. Anthony also scored a game high 29 points against Bullard in the Super Saturday Tournament.
Sophomore Jalen Green of San Joaquin Memorial opened last week by scoring 30 points against Garces in a 89-47 win. In the second game of the week, Green scored a game high of 34 points in a 74-63 win over visiting Edison. He started this week with three straight 30-point games and the Panthers were No. 11 in this week’s state rankings.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sophomore Hannah Hurley led Kern Valley of Lake Isabella to back to back wins for the week. In the first game against Wonderful Academy, the Broncs won 68-51 as she scored 36 points & had six steals and six rebounds. In the second game against Bishop Union in a 62-31 win, Hurley scored 36 points and had 10 steals and six rebounds.
Felicia Ramirez of Caruthers scored a career high of 36 points in a
75-20 win against Parlier.
Finally, Macie Thompson of Fresno Christian scored a game-high of 30 points in a 56-45 win over Fowler.
