Each week on Thursdays, we’ll pick one game involving a team in the Top 50 of our state rankings that we think has the best chance to suffer an upset loss. We’ll see if we can nail one or two of them during the season. Picking 70 percent of wins is easy for any prep writer. But just stick to upsets and it’s not so easy.
UPSET SPECIAL OF THE WEEK
Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) over Edison (Huntington Beach)
The Chargers are at home and were No. 17 overall in the state this week. Oaks Christian wasn’t in the preseason Top 50 but was No. 2 in the L.A. Daily News preseason rankings, then lost its first game 47-10 to No. 7 Chaminade.
Edison had to hold on for a 48-47 win over Tesoro of Las Flores in its opener. The upset pick is based on the thinking that Chaminade may actually be quite good and that Oaks Christian’s experience against explosive, talented teams will give it a chance against Edison. Also, Tesoro was only 5-6 last season and not sure yet if the one-point win last week is an indication that the Titans are a lot better this season or that Edison has slipped. If the Chargers slip against a foe with the talent that Oaks Christian has, the upset could come true.
